Identifying candidate de novo genes expressed in the somatic female reproductive tract of Drosophila melanogaster

Kaelina D. Lombardo et al.

Summary: Most eukaryotic genes are vertically transmitted from ancestors, but gene gain and loss can also occur, resulting in variable gene numbers across species. Previous studies in Drosophila have shown that de novo genes, which are born from non-genic ancestral sequences, are commonly expressed in male reproductive tissues. However, there is a lack of research on female reproductive tissues. In this study, we analyzed the transcriptomes of three female reproductive tract organs in three Drosophila species to identify putative D. melanogaster-specific de novo genes.

Single-nucleus transcriptomes reveal evolutionary and functional properties of cell types in the Drosophila accessory gland

Alex C. Majane et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively describes cell diversity and transcriptome evolution of accessory gland and ejaculatory duct by single-nucleus RNA-Seq in Drosophila melanogaster and two closely related species. The research found that seminal fluid transcripts are strongly partitioned across major cell types, and many other genes define each cell type. Additionally, transcriptome divergence varies across cell types and lineages, revealing a complex evolutionary process.

Population biology of accessory gland-expressed de novo genes in Drosophila melanogaster

Julie M. Cridland et al.

Summary: Research on de novo gene discovery in Drosophila has revealed significant differences in gene abundance and expression between different tissues, particularly in the testis and accessory gland. While other properties such as transcript length and chromosomal distribution are more similar, regulatory mechanisms may vary and interact with selection to produce differences in de novo genes expressed in male reproductive tissues.

The life history of Drosophila sperm involves molecular continuity between male and female reproductive tracts

Erin L. McCullough et al.

Summary: This study investigates the life history of Drosophila melanogaster sperm proteome and reveals substantial compositional changes after sperm are transferred to the female reproductive tract (FRT). Multiple seminal fluid proteins initially associate with sperm, but become undetectable after sperm storage. Female-derived proteins also associate with sperm immediately after mating, and contribute nearly 20% to the postmating sperm proteome after storage in the FRT. These female-derived proteins are enriched in processes associated with energy metabolism, suggesting their role in supporting sperm viability during the period between copulation and fertilization.

Seminal fluid gene expression and reproductive fitness in Drosophila melanogaster

Summary: This study suggests that variation in gene expression plays a more predominant role than coding sequence changes in sperm competitive ability in Drosophila melanogaster. The manipulation of SFP encoding genes through tissue-specific knockdowns has shown that selectively constrained genes have a lower impact on sperm competitive ability compared to genes evolving under relaxed selection.

Identification of a micropeptide and multiple secondary cell genes that modulate Drosophila male reproductive success

Clement Immarigeon et al.

Summary: Many transcripts previously considered noncoding RNAs are now found to produce peptides with important biological functions, such as the micropeptide encoded by male-specific abdominal RNA. This micropeptide is expressed exclusively in the secondary cells of the male accessory gland of Drosophila, and its loss of function results in defects in sperm competition, highlighting the importance of small peptides in biological processes.
