Characterization and variation of dissolved organic matter in composting: a critical review

Yanghui Xiong

Summary: This study summarizes the impact of different composting approaches and conditions on the properties of compost-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM), as well as the changes in DOM characteristics during composting. With composting, the elements and spectral properties of DOM were altered, and size, hydrophobicity, aromatic-C, and electron transfer capacity were promoted. The paper also suggests future improvements in this area. It is valuable for individuals interested in tracing the fate of DOM in composting.

Positive Priming Effects Induced by Allochthonous and Autochthonous Organic Matter Input in the Lake Sediments With Different Salinity

Jian Yang et al.

Summary: The microbial mineralization of algal and grass organic matter in lake sediments with different salinity levels was investigated. The addition of algal and grass organic matter significantly increased CO2 production rates in the sediments. The intensity of positive priming effect induced by grass organic matter was higher than that induced by algal organic matter. The intensity of positive priming effect induced by both algal and grass organic matter decreased with increasing salinity.

Important Roles of Thiols in Methylmercury Uptake and Translocation by Rice Plants

Yun-Yun Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different types and concentrations of thiols on the uptake and translocation of MeHg in rice plants. The results showed that cysteine facilitated MeHg uptake and translocation, while glutathione only promoted uptake and penicillamine significantly inhibited uptake and translocation. Comparative transcriptomics analysis revealed that key genes may be involved in MeHg uptake.

Characteristics of plankton Hg bioaccumulations based on a global data set and the implications for aquatic systems with aggravating nutrient imbalance

Zhike Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated factors influencing mercury bioaccumulation by plankton in aquatic ecosystems worldwide, finding higher THg and MeHg concentrations in inland waters compared to nearshore waters and open seas. The study also revealed that MeHg concentrations increased with cell size, and a contrasting relationship between plankton biomasses and BAF(MeHg) was observed. The authors recommended incorporating potential influences of nutrient compositions on plankton growth and composition in future aquatic Hg modeling and ecological risk assessments.

Photo-Reactivity and Photo-Transformation of Algal Dissolved Organic Matter Unraveled by Optical Spectroscopy and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry Analysis

Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: The rapid proliferation of planktonic algae induced by eutrophication and climate warming make algae dissolved organic matter an important source of dissolved organic matter in surface waters. The intracellular organic matter from Microcystis aeruginosa has lower aromaticity and higher photo-sensitive activity compared to Suwannee River fulvic acid. Light radiation results in the composition transformation of the organic matter, forming less aromatic and more saturated recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon.

Contribution of periphytic biofilm of paddy soils to carbon dioxide fixation and methane emissions

Sichu Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the contribution of periphytic biofilm (PB) to CO2 and CH4 emissions from rice paddies and found that PB played a significant role in carbon fluxes. PB fixed CO2 and promoted aerobic CH4 oxidation during its growth phase, while it increased soil organic carbon availability and methanogenic microbial community growth during the decay phase, leading to increased CH4 emissions.

Mercury removal from flue gas using nitrate as an electron acceptor in a membrane biofilm reactor

Zaishan Wei et al.

Summary: The study revealed that a membrane biofilm reactor using nitrate as the electron acceptor achieved effective mercury removal from flue gas, with a removal efficiency of up to 88.7%. Oxygen content in the flue gas influenced mercury redox reactions, biological oxidation, and microbial methylation. Addition of ferrous sulfide promoted mercury transformation and inhibited methylation, leading to a change in dominant bacteria from Halomonas to Planctopirus. Nitrate drove mercury oxidation through various enzymes for Hg-0 removal in flue gas.

Effects of mercury stress on methylmercury production in rice rhizosphere, methylmercury uptake in rice and physiological changes of leaves

Pan Guo et al.

Summary: Moderate soil mercury concentration (3 mg kg(-1)) could greatly enhance MeHg production in the rhizosphere soil and its accumulation in rice; MeHg production in the rhizosphere soil increased greatly at the blooming or filling stage, whereas little effect on antioxidant systems in leaves was observed.

Straw return enhances the risks of metals in soil?

Yao Su et al.

Summary: There is evidence showing that straw return may enhance the bioavailability and risks of certain metals in crops, such as Cd, Hg, and As. Mechanisms leading to increased metal mobility and bioavailability under straw return include dissolution, complexation, and methylation, which can potentially impact the physiology and absorption of metals in plants. This study highlights the importance of re-evaluating current straw return policies, especially in metal-contaminated farmlands.

Molecular insights into the effects of pyrolysis temperature on composition and copper binding properties of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter

Mei Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of pyrolysis temperature of biochar on the interactions between biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM) and Cu was investigated using advanced spectroscopic and mass spectroscopic methods. The binding affinity of BDOM and Cu significantly increased with higher pyrolysis temperatures, leading to differences in the sequences binding with Cu. Overall, the results provide valuable insights into the environmental applications of biochar.

The exacerbation of mercury methylation by Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA in a freshwater algae-bacteria symbiotic system throughout the lifetime of algae

Qingxia Zhao et al.

Summary: The presence of the algae Chlorella pyrenoidosa significantly enhanced the methylation of mercury by Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA, resulting in a substantial increase in methylmercury production rates throughout the algae growth period. Additionally, the increase of algal organic matter and thiols with the algal growth period played a role in exacerbating the production of methylmercury.
