Contact-less, non-resonant and high-frequency ultrasonic technique: Towards a universal tool for plant leaf study

Summary: Non-contact measurement of plant water status using ultrasound has emerged as a powerful alternative. This study proposes and tests an ultrasound technique that can be applied to all leaves regardless of the presence of thickness resonances. The technique is based on contactless measurement of high-frequency airborne ultrasonic pulses and provides leaf ultrasonic velocity.

Water status indicators are promising candidates for real-time monitoring of DIM, particularly if they standardize morphological differences among plants. Time to incipient mortality differed between populations but occurred at the same relative water content (RWC) and water potential (WP), both of which were accurate predictors of drought mortality risk.
