The influence of climate, soil physicochemical properties and tree size inequality on tree slenderness in mixed forests of Northeastern China

Dongyuan Tian et al.

Summary: The lack of TSC models for exploring tree stability in mixed forests has hindered the development of near-natural silviculture programs and forest management decisions. This study developed a nonlinear mixed-effects TSC model for 14 tree species based on data from forest plots in northeastern China. The results showed that biotic and abiotic factors such as climate, soil, wind speed, species mixtures, and diversity indices significantly influenced TSC, and the effects varied with species heterogeneity. This research provides valuable insights into the factors driving tree stability in mixed forests and the response patterns of TSC to environmental gradients.

Tree species growth response to climate in mixtures of Quercus robur/ Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris across Europe- a dynamic, sensitive equilibrium

Sonja Vospernik et al.

Summary: Quercus robur/Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris are economically important tree species in Europe, and their growth can be affected by climate, competition, and mixture. This study investigated the diameter growth of these species in monospecific and mixed stands along an ecological gradient. The final model explained 87% of the total variation in diameter increment, with significant effects of age, climate variables, local competition, mixture, and stand structure. The results showed that tree growth declined with age and local density, but increased with social position and mixture.

Norway spruce sapling plasticity in their responses of architecture and growth to light gradient decreases with altitude in subalpine stands

Olga Orman et al.

Summary: This study examined the variation of growth and architectural properties of Norway spruce saplings along an elevation gradient. The results showed that light had a greater influence on sapling growth, while altitude had limited effects on crown morphology and growth. The findings provide recommendations for forest managers in regulating light conditions.

Using random forest to disentangle the effects of environmental conditions on height-to-diameter ratio of Engelmann spruce

Shuai Liu et al.

Summary: Based on inventory data of 9004 Engelmann spruce trees from 997 permanent plots, this study used the random forest algorithm to develop the H-D ratio model of Engelmann spruce. The results reveal that competition is the primary driver for the variation in H-D ratio of Engelmann spruce, followed by site index, topography and climate variables. The effects of climate on H-D ratio were not as large as expected.

Natural disturbances risks in European Boreal and Temperate forests and their links to climate change-A review of modelling approaches

Joyce Machado Nunes Romeiro et al.

Summary: European Boreal and Temperate forests are expected to be greatly affected by climate change, leading to an increase in frequency and severity of natural disturbances. This review investigates the link between the most important forestry-related natural disturbances and climate change, and explores different modelling approaches for assessing the risks of these disturbances in forest management planning.

Tree-level differences in Norway spruce and Scots pine growth after extreme thinning treatments

Simone Bianchi et al.

Summary: This study investigated tree-level dynamics in spruce- and pine-dominated stands after intermediate commercial thinning of different type and intensity. The results showed that extreme thinning increased individual tree basal area growth and decreased stem slenderness for both species. There were only small differences across thinning types, suggesting that crown thinning is a viable alternative to the widely-used low thinning in Fennoscandia.

Emerging stability of forest productivity by mixing two species buffers temperature destabilizing effect

Miren del Rio et al.

Summary: The increasing disturbances in monocultures around the world have led to a growing demand for species mixing. This study analyzed forest data from a wide range of climate conditions in Europe and found that mixing species can significantly increase both the level and stability of stand growth. Temperature was identified as a key factor destabilizing stand growth, which can be mitigated by species mixing. Asynchrony between species was confirmed as the main driver of temporal stability in mixed stands.

Mapping the forest disturbance regimes of Europe

Cornelius Senf et al.

Summary: Changes in forest disturbance can have significant impacts on forests, with this study finding that 17% of Europe's forest area was affected by approximately 36 million disturbances between 1986 and 2016. The majority of disturbances were stand-replacing, and while disturbance size trends varied, disturbance frequency consistently increased while disturbance severity decreased over time. The study provides valuable spatial information for understanding the ongoing changes in Europe's forests.

Variation in height-diameter allometry of ponderosa pine along competition, climate, and species diversity gradients in the western United States

Hanqing Qiu et al.

Summary: Through studying the height-diameter allometry of ponderosa pine, it was found that the variation in allometry across different environmental gradients was more strongly influenced by neighborhood competition, rather than climate. The large-scale variation in the height-diameter allometry of ponderosa pine was mainly explained by neighboring competition and partly by climate, diversity, or topography.

Tree growth as affected by stem and crown structure

Hans Pretzsch

Summary: The traditional prediction of tree growth based on Metabolic Scaling Theory may be oversimplified, as considering stem and crown morphology can significantly improve the accuracy of growth prediction. Analysis of common tree species in Europe showed that tree growth is not only dependent on size or mass, but also on factors such as past development and current inner and outer morphology.

Emergent vulnerability to climate-driven disturbances in European forests

Giovanni Forzieri et al.

Summary: This study quantifies European forest vulnerability to fires, windthrows, and insect outbreaks from 1979 to 2018 using machine learning, disturbance data, and satellite products. Results show that about 33.4 billion tonnes of forest biomass could be seriously affected, with higher relative losses in windthrows and fires compared to insect outbreaks. The spatial pattern of vulnerability is influenced by forest characteristics and background climate, with hotspot regions identified at the borders of the climate envelope in southern and northern Europe.

Devastating outbreak of bark beetles in the Czech Republic: Drivers, impacts, and management implications

T. Hlasny et al.

Summary: The outbreak of spruce bark beetles in the Czech Republic, driven by climate extremes and unfavorable forest structure, has led to significant ecological, economic, and social impacts. Management actions exacerbated conflicts between forest management and nature conservation, highlighting the need for structural changes to enhance social and ecological resilience in the regional forest-based sector.

Growth resistance and resilience of mixed silver fir and Norway spruce forests in central Europe: Contrasting responses to mild and severe droughts

Alessandra Bottero et al.

Summary: The study found that silver fir exhibited higher resistance and resilience to mild droughts compared to spruce, with species interactions and management-related factors playing a crucial role in responses to severe droughts. Adjusting species composition, tree size distribution, and stand density can mitigate the negative impacts of severe droughts on mixed silver fir-Norway spruce forests.
