Laguncularia racemosa leaves indicate the presence of potentially toxic elements in mangroves

Cristiane Pimentel Victorio et al.

Summary: Brazilian mangroves have been heavily impacted by industrial activities, resulting in high levels of pollution and toxic substances in the Atlantic Rainforest. This study aimed to detect potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the leaves of Laguncularia racemosa from three different mangroves. The results showed varying concentrations of PTEs, with zinc detected in sclerenchyma tissues. The presence of PTEs in L. racemosa leaves suggest it could be a suitable biomonitor for toxic substances in coastal environments.

Lessons from A Degradation of Planted Kandelia obovata Mangrove Forest in the Pearl River Estuary, China

Tao Lang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the ecological status of the Kandelia obovata and Sonneratia caseolaris mangrove species on the western coast of Bao'an, Shenzhen, China. Results showed that Sonneratia caseolaris had a stronger adaptability to environmental stress compared to Kandelia obovata.

Mapping global distribution of mangrove forests at 10-m resolution

Mingming Jia et al.

Summary: Based on Sentinel-2 imagery, this study created a global mangrove forest dataset (HGMF_2020) using object-based image analysis and random forest classification. The analysis showed that the global mangrove forest coverage was 145,068 km2 in 2020, with Asia having the largest coverage. Mangrove forests in South Asia were in better condition compared to those in East and Southeast Asia. The study also found that nearly all mangrove forests were efficient in reducing coastal wave energy and impacts.

Microcosm study on cold adaptation and recovery of an exotic mangrove plant, Laguncularia racemosa in China

Tao Lang et al.

Summary: This study determined the cold resistance level of Laguncularia racemosa and its recovery from cold stress. The results showed that L. racemosa can tolerate low temperatures to some extent and recover to the original levels after cold stress. This poses a challenge to the conservation and management of mangrove ecosystems in cold regions of China.

Spartina alterniflora invasion controls organic carbon stocks in coastal marsh and mangrove soils across tropics and subtropics

Shaopan Xia et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the invasion of smooth cordgrass affects the storage and stability of soil organic carbon in wetlands, leading to changes in SOC storage. The impact of smooth cordgrass invasion varies in different types of wetlands, with mangrove wetlands being most severely affected and requiring efforts to restore native vegetation.

Mechanistic Modeling of Marsh Seedling Establishment Provides a Positive Outlook for Coastal Wetland Restoration Under Global Climate Change

Zhan Hu et al.

Summary: This study translated recent experimental findings into a new biogeomorphic model to predict marsh establishment extent, emphasizing the importance of controllable local conditions over uncontrollable climate change factors for future coastal wetland restorations. Machine learning was used to quantify these findings and validate the model against natural seedling expansion events in the Netherlands and China, highlighting the potential for science-based local management measures in managing coastal ecosystems under similar stresses.

Ecological responses, adaptation and mechanisms of mangrove wetland ecosystem to global climate change and anthropogenic activities

You-Shao Wang et al.

Summary: Mangrove wetlands, as unique marine ecosystems, play important ecological roles in maintaining tropical and subtropical marine biodiversity and global biogeochemical processes. However, they are also sensitive to environmental changes and human activities, facing threats to their survival and distribution.
