Research progress on the lipid-lowering and weight loss effects of tea and the mechanism of its functional components

Ziying Zhang et al.

Summary: Obesity caused by poor eating habits is a major challenge for public health organizations worldwide. Optimizing dietary intake and consuming foods containing biologically active substances, such as polyphenols, alkaloids, and terpenes, is a safe and effective intervention for preventing obesity. Tea, with its active dietary factors, has been shown to have various health benefits, particularly in regulating metabolic diseases. This review provides recent advances in tea research and its functional components in improving obesity-related metabolic dysfunction and gut microbiota homeostasis, as well as potential mechanisms for lipid-lowering and weight-loss effects.

Compound dark tea ameliorates obesity and hepatic steatosis and modulates the gut microbiota in mice

Jianyu Qu et al.

Summary: By adding green tea, Ilex latifolia Thunb (kuding tea), and Momordica grosvenori (Luo Han Guo) to a new compound dark tea (CDT), the taste and health effects of this beverage can be improved. Under a high-fat diet, low- and high-concentrations of CDT can reduce body weight and body fat by attenuating body weight gain and fat accumulation, improving glucose tolerance, alleviating metabolic endotoxemia, and regulating the mRNA expression levels of lipid metabolism-related genes. Furthermore, low concentrations of CDT can decrease the abundance of Desulfovibrio, which is positively associated with obesity, and increase the abundance of Ruminococcus, which are negatively associated with obesity.

Bamboo-based magnetic activated carbon for efficient removal of sulfadiazine: Application and adsorption mechanism

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: Due to the increasing pollution of antibiotics in water, the development of green and efficient adsorbents is urgently needed. In this study, magnetic bamboo-based activated carbon (MDBAC) was prepared through delignification and carbonization using ZnCl2 as an activator. MDBAC demonstrated a large specific surface area (1388.83 m2 g-1) and showed excellent adsorption performance for sulfadiazine (SD), with an adsorption capacity of 645.08 mg g-1. The MDBAC biosorbent exhibited physicochemical stability, magnetic recovery, and recyclability properties, making it a promising candidate for removing antibiotic contaminants from wastewater.

Autochthonous bioaugmentation accelerates phenanthrene degradation in acclimated soil

Haiping Gu et al.

Summary: Bioaugmentation was used to obtain a microbiome capable of degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The study found that acclimating microorganisms to soil supplemented with phenanthrene led to the enrichment of PAH-degrading bacteria, including Actinobacteriota and genera such as Streptomyces, Rhodococcus, Nocardioides, Sphingomonas, and Mycobacterium. The degradation efficiency of phenanthrene in aqueous and soil cultures inoculated with phenanthrene-acclimated soil was found to be high. This research provides theoretical and practical support for the bioremediation of PAHs in the environment.

Analysis of bacterial community structure of Fuzhuan tea with different processing techniques

Shiquan Liu et al.

Summary: This study compared the bacterial community structures of loose, lightly-pressed, hand-made, and machine-pressed Fuzhuan teas and raw dark tea. The results showed notable differences in the bacterial communities of the five groups, with only 51 consensus sequences. Machine-pressed tea exhibited the highest bacterial diversity. Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Cyanobacteria were the dominant bacterial phyla in each group, while Corynebacterium, Methylobacterium, and Bifidobacterium were the dominant genera.

Lovastatin production by an oleaginous fungus, Aspergillus terreus KPR12 using sago processing wastewater (SWW)

Naganandhini Srinivasan et al.

Summary: In this study, lovastatin was produced from sago processing wastewater using oleaginous fungal strains A. terreus KPR12 and A. caespitosus ASEF14. The results showed that lovastatin produced by A. terreus KPR12 and A. caespitosus ASEF14 was lactonized. Furthermore, the starch-rich wastewater not only served as a suitable medium for lovastatin production but also effectively decontaminated the wastewater for reuse.

Impact of Light and Temperature on Growth, Intracellular and Extracellular Pigment, and Lovastatin Yield by Monascus ruber in Synthetic Medium

K. Suganya et al.

Summary: The development of alternate sources for natural pigments is important to overcome the use of artificial coloring and to benefit the food industry. This study investigated the effects of different light sources and temperatures on the pigment yield, lovastatin production, and biomass of Monascus ruber. The results showed that optimal temperature and exposure to certain light conditions enhance pigment and lovastatin production. However, exposure to other color lights significantly reduces fungus growth and pigment yield. Darkness also influences pigment production and biomass yield. The findings provide valuable knowledge for the production of functional foods and industrial applications.
