A Climate-Sensitive Transition Matrix Growth Model for Masson Pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.) Natural Forests in Hunan Province, South-Central China

Xue Du et al.

Summary: Masson pine natural forests in China are ecologically and economically valuable but are facing deforestation due to human disturbance. Climate change affects forest dynamics, but existing growth models do not effectively analyze climate impacts. A climate-sensitive transition matrix model (CM) was developed using data from forest inventories in Hunan Province, and it outperformed other models in long-term predictions under different climate scenarios. The CM model provides valuable guidance for managing Masson pine forests in the context of climate change.

Optimizing neighborhood-based stand spatial structure: Four cases of boreal forests

Lingbo Dong et al.

Summary: The development of a tree-level harvest planning tool based on neighborhood-based structural indexes has shown improvements in objective function values, with a priority on adjusting species mingling and crowdedness in structure-based forest management.

Localized neighborhood species mingling is correlated with individual tree size inequality in natural forests in South China

Hong-Xiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study identified significant spatial relationships between tree species mingling and size inequality in various species-rich natural forests in South China. Forest communities with low species mingling showed increased segregation of trees with dissimilar sizes, while large trees were more likely to be associated with high species mingling. Neighboring tree sizes and species diversity were closely correlated in individual tree neighborhoods.

Stability in subtropical forests: The role of tree species diversity, stand structure, environmental and socio-economic conditions

Shuai Ouyang et al.

Summary: The study found that tree species diversity has a positive impact on forest stability, especially in mountainous forests. Tree species richness increases the average productivity of the forest, while species asynchrony reduces the variability in productivity, thus enhancing forest stability.

Carbon Sequestration in Mixed Deciduous Forests: The Influence of Tree Size and Species Composition Derived from Model Experiments

Anne Holtmann et al.

Summary: This study incorporated field inventory data into a forest model to investigate daily carbon fluxes in a species-mixed deciduous forest in Germany. Results showed that medium-sized trees contribute the most to total productivity, while vertical stand structure and shading have a greater impact on forest productivity than species composition.
