Groundnut and tree nuts: a comprehensive review on their lipid components, phytochemicals, and nutraceutical properties

Damian Maestri

Summary: The health benefits of nut consumption, attributed to their rich content of healthy lipids and phytochemicals, have been extensively demonstrated in various studies. Nuts can contribute to health promotion and prevention of certain diseases due to their nutritional value and additional bioactive properties. This article provides an overview of the chemical composition and bioactive properties of peanuts and common tree nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pistachios, macadamias, and pecans. It also reviews the scientific literature linking nut consumption and/or their components to the amelioration and/or prevention of diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, and neurodegenerative pathologies. The bioactive properties are analyzed in the context of known mechanistic frameworks.

Effects of Trace Elements on Traits and Functional Active Compounds of Camellia oleifera in Nutrient-Poor Forests

Qiuyue Dai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of spraying selenium, boron, and zinc trace elements on the traits and functional active compounds of Camellia oleifera under nutrient deficiency. Different combinations of trace elements had significant variations in their effects on C. oleifera. Optimal concentrations of zinc and selenium were critical for promoting fruit growth and development, increasing fruit size, weight, seed number, oil content, and yield. However, high concentrations of selenium and dilutions of zinc negatively impacted fruit size. A careful balance of trace elements was required to enhance both fruit growth and oil yield. The appropriate fertilizer combinations could also increase the content of functional active compounds in C. oleifera oil, thereby improving its value.

Composition of Nuts and Their Potential Health Benefits-An Overview

Berta Goncalves et al.

Summary: The possibility of using nut intake to protect human health has been widely investigated and promoted worldwide. Studies have shown a correlation between nut consumption and a reduced risk of chronic diseases, which may be attributed to their fiber content, as well as the minerals, vitamins, and phytochemicals they provide. This overview aims to summarize current information and highlight the latest research on the health benefits of specific nuts.

Analysis of Alternative Splicing During the Combinatorial Response to Simultaneous Copper and Iron Deficiency in Arabidopsis Reveals Differential Events in Genes Involved in Amino Acid Metabolism

Estefania Mancini et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of alternative splicing (AS) on the transcriptome of rosette leaves under single and simultaneous copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) deficiency. It was found that differentially spliced genes (DSGs) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) showed minimal overlap in number, indicating distinct responses to the double deficiency. Furthermore, it was observed that AS might act as a regulatory mechanism to modify the stability and/or functionality of enzymes involved in amino acid production during the combinatorial response to simultaneous Cu and Fe deficiency.

Walnut (Juglans regia L.) oil chemical composition depending on variety, locality, extraction process and storage conditions: A comprehensive review

Catherine Rebufa et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the chemical composition of walnut oil, including major and minor compounds, based on the varieties and geographic origins of walnuts, as well as the oil extraction processes. The study mainly focused on quantifying fatty acids and tocopherols, with less emphasis on the triacylglycerol composition and minor components of the oil. Volatile compound profiles were analyzed to assess the oxidative degree of the oil and understand the impact of fatty acid degradation on the organoleptic properties. However, sensory analyses were rarely conducted. The review highlights the lack of knowledge on walnut sampling prior to oil analysis and inconsistencies in some chemical compound results. The impact of walnut variety, storage, and oil extraction process on the chemical composition and nutritional and taste qualities of the oil was documented, but the temporal factor of harvest, packaging, and storage conditions of the oil were rarely considered.

Chemical Compositions of Walnut (Juglans Spp.) Oil: Combined Effects of Genetic and Climatic Factors

Hanbo Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the variation and main climatic factors affecting the chemical composition of walnut oil. The results showed significant differences in fatty acid, micronutrients, and secondary metabolites composition and contents between different species and cultivation sites. Climatic factors had a significant impact on the composition and content of fatty acid, while genetic factors played a key role in determining the content of certain substances. The average relative humidity had the most significant effect on the fatty acids, micronutrients, and secondary metabolites in walnut oil.

Sodium intake, health implications, and the role of population-level strategies

Ghadeer S. Aljuraiban et al.

Summary: The evidence to date shows that high sodium intake has adverse effects on health, particularly on blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. Implementing population-level strategies to reduce sodium intake is challenging, and it remains unclear whether reducing sodium intake benefits all individuals or only hypertensive individuals. Methodological issues and publication bias in current evidence are concerns in sodium-related research. Efforts to reduce sodium intake should consider improving research quality, reducing bias in publications, and critically reviewing evidence.

Fatty Acid Stable Carbon Isotope Ratios Combined with Oxidation Kinetics for Characterization and Authentication of Walnut Oils

Limin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 12 typical walnut oils from six main producing areas in China, finding that walnut oils with higher oleic acid content tend to be more stable against oxidation. The results suggest that fatty acid stable carbon isotope ratios combined with chemometrics and lipid compositions are promising for vegetable oil authentication and discrimination.

Analysis of Fatty Acid Esters of Hydroxyl Fatty Acid in Nut Oils and Other Plant Oils

Hiroko Takumi et al.

Summary: The study examined the composition of FAHFAs in nut oils and other common oils, revealing variations in the quantity and types of FAHFAs present. Nut oils were found to contain primarily unsaturated fatty acids, while olive oil contained a mixture of unsaturated and saturated fatty acids. The research also suggested that incorporating nuts into daily diets may help in preventing metabolic and inflammatory-based diseases.
