Analysis of Wave Breaking on Gaofen-3 and TerraSAR-X SAR Image and Its Effect on Wave Retrieval

Ruozhu Zhong et al.

Summary: The main purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of wave breaking and its effect on wave retrieval using data from the GF-3 SAR at C-band and the TS-X SAR at X-band. The study found that the backscattering signal in the C-band is more sensitive to wave breaking and has a linear correlation with wind speed. Furthermore, the study revealed that the error increases as wind speed (>8 m/s) and whitecap coverage (>0.005) increase, suggesting that wave retrieval during tropical cyclones should consider the influence of wave breaking.

Improvement of VV-polarization tilt MTF for Gaofen-3 SAR data of a tropical cyclone

Yuyi Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, the tilt modulation transfer function (MTF) on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is improved through the analysis of five Gaofen-3 (GF-3) SAR images acquired during the 2017 tropical cyclone season in the western Pacific Ocean. The dependence of tilt on wind speed and incidence angle is explored using more than 9,000 matchups. The research findings suggest a strong inverse relationship between the quantitative tilt MTF and incidence angle, as well as an influence of wind speed on the derivative scattering coefficient.

Validation of Surface Waves Investigation and Monitoring Data against Simulation by Simulating Waves Nearshore and Wave Retrieval from Gaofen-3 Synthetic Aperture Radar Image

Mengyu Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of wave parameters derived from the Chinese-French Oceanography SATellite (CFOSAT) wave spectrometer (SWIM) at different incidence angles, as well as verifies its accuracy through comparison with simulated results and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The results indicate that the SWIM product is a relevant resource for wave monitoring over global seas, and it shows good consistency with SAR-derived wave spectra at an incidence angle of 10 degrees.

Retrieval of Rain Rates for Tropical Cyclones From Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar Images

Xianbin Zhao et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for retrieving rain rate from C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images during tropical cyclones (TCs). Seven dual-polarized Sentinel-1 SAR images were used, and rain rates measured by Microwave Radiometers were compared. Wind speeds were retrieved from SAR images using a geophysical model function. Rain cells were identified based on differences in normalized radar cross section (NRCS). An empirical function named CRAIN_S1 was developed for rain retrieval. Validation of the results showed a root mean square error of 0.58 mm/h and a correlation of 0.89.

Contribution of breaking wave on the co-polarized backscattering measured by the Chinese Gaofen-3 SAR

Zhanfeng Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the non-Bragg scattering due to breaking waves as measured by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is investigated using a large number of SAR images. The study compares SAR-based wind estimation with other instruments and simulations, and studies the behavior of sea surface scattering under breaking conditions. The study finds that non-polarized wave breaking enhances horizontal-horizontal polarized backscattering and decreases vertical-vertical polarized backscattering.

Impact of rain on wave retrieval from Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar images in tropical cyclones

X. B. Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of rain on wave observations in tropical cyclones using C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images and the SWAN model. It was found that rain affects SAR wave retrieval, with raindrops dampening wave retrieval at lower rain rates but enhancing it at higher rain rates. Additionally, the study observed the presence of rain-induced ring waves in SAR-derived wave spectra.

Weizeng Shao et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the wind and wave data obtained from scatterometer and altimeter on the Chinese HY-2B satellite, indicating better accuracy in wind measurements from the scatterometer compared to the altimeter. The significant wave heights measured by HY-2B were in agreement with Jason-3 altimeter measurements. The performance of HY-2B wind measurements was found to be good under specific sea conditions, while including sea surface temperature in scatterometer wind speed retrieval was recommended.
