Adverse effects of right ventricular pacing on cardiac function: prevalence, prevention and treatment with physiologic pacing

Tasneem Z. Naqvi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the deleterious effects of chronic right ventricular (RV) pacing on cardiac function, including the development of arrhythmias, heart failure, and cardiac mortality. The adverse effects of RV pacing are more pronounced in patients with pre-existing left ventricular dysfunction. The review also explores the mechanisms, risk factors, clinical and echocardiographic features, and strategies to minimize RV pacing-induced cardiac dysfunction based on the latest data.

Safety and performance of MR-conditional pacing systems with automated MRI mode at 1.5 and 3 Tesla

Jean-Nicolas Dacher et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and performance of trademarked -ENO (R), -TEO (R), or -OTO (R) pacing systems at 1.5 and 3 T MRI, as well as the image quality of non-enhanced MR examinations. The results showed low incidence of MRI-related complications, good electrical stability of the pacing systems, and preserved interpretability of MRI images.

Magnetic resonance imaging safety in patients with abandoned or functioning epicardial pacing leads

Aino-Maija Vuorinen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the safety of performing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) and epicardial pacing leads. The results showed that MRI scans performed on patients with modern functioning epicardial pacing leads did not detect any adverse events, but further research is needed to confirm the safety of MRIs in patients with epicardial pacing leads.

Joint British Society consensus recommendations for magnetic resonance imaging for patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices

Anish Bhuva et al.

Summary: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is now accessible to most patients with cardiac devices, allowing them to have the same opportunities for MRI scanning as the general population. However, provision of MRI for patients with Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs) is still limited in the UK, requiring specialist equipment and protocols to ensure patient safety and facilitate workflows.

Transcatheter treatment for tricuspid valve disease

Fabien Praz et al.

Summary: Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a common heart condition, with secondary TR being more prevalent than primary TR. TR leads to volume overload and detrimental heart remodelling, impacting patients' survival rates and heart failure symptoms. Transcatheter interventions represent a new treatment approach, but are underutilised in clinical practice, requiring appropriate expertise and interdisciplinary teamwork to be successful.

Haran Burri et al.

Summary: With the increasing number of device implantations worldwide, the need to train physicians in the implantation of pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators is growing. Despite international recommendations for device indications and programming, there is currently no consensus on implantation techniques. This document, based on a systematic literature review and consensus from an international task force, aims to establish standards for device implantation to address this gap.

Summary: The provision of MRI for patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices in England increased over fourfold in 4 years, but there remains an estimated 10-fold care gap. Although complication rates were extremely low, almost half of hospitals and 1 in 10 STPs have no service available.
