An Old World leaf-cutting, fungus-growing ant: A case of convergent evolution

Summary: The African ant species Crematogaster clariventris cuts leaves from different plant species to reinforce their nests with fungal mycelia. Using scanning electron microscopy and metabarcoding, the presence of specific fungal OTUs was detected in the ant nests and workers' bodies. This case of convergent evolution with leaf-cutting, fungus-growing Attina ants of the New World is characterized by differences in fungus cultivation, geographical origin, ant tribe, and mandible usage.

The Last Piece of the Puzzle? Phylogenetic Position and Natural History of the Monotypic Fungus-Farming Ant Genus Paramycetophylax (Formicidae: Attini)

Summary: The study provides insights into the natural history and phylogenetic position of the monotypic genus Paramycetophylax. Through excavations and DNA analysis, the relationship between their fungal cultivar and other fungus-farming ants is revealed. The results suggest that the fungal cultivar of Paramycetophylax belongs to a lower-attine fungi and is closely related to the yeast cultivars of the Cyphomyrmex rimosus group. This research provides important clues for understanding the evolution of fungus-farming ants.

Novel black yeast-like species in chaetothyriales with ant-associated life styles

Summary: In this study, two previously undescribed fungal species, Incumbomyces delicatus and Incumbomyces lentus, were discovered in ant cartons from Thailand and Malaysia. They were classified based on morphological, physiological, and phylogenetic analysis, with LSU and ITS ribosomal DNA sequences being sufficient for taxonomic circumscription. The strains clustered together within the family Trichomeriaceae, showing similarities in morphology and lack of sporulation in vitro.

Lasius fuliginosus Nest Carton as a Source of New Promising Bioactive Extracts with Chemopreventive Potential

Summary: Six new water extracts obtained from nest carton of jet black ants were found to have significant antioxidative and anticancer effects. Extracts E1 and E2 showed the highest antioxidative potential, while extract E2 exhibited the most interesting chemopreventive activity against A-375 melanoma cells. The promising results of this study may lead to further research on the nest carton of jet black ant.
