Tetrahymena pyriformis infection in the tiger barb, Puntius tetrazona: Parasite characterization and pathology of infected fish

Xuming Pan et al.

Summary: Tetrahymena pyriformis is a histophagus protozoan ciliate responsible for tetrahymenosis, with its morphology, infraciliature, SSU rRNA and cox 1 gene sequences investigated using various methods. Diseased fish exhibit symptoms such as mucus secretion, red spots on eyes and fins, and shriveled and pale gills. Scratch inoculation with T. pyriformis successfully infected P. tetrazona, emphasizing the importance of lesions on body surface in the invasion process.

Further insights into the phylogeny of peniculid ciliates (Ciliophora, Oligohymenophorea) based on multigene data

Meng Sun et al.

Summary: The study reports 27 new sequences of Peniculids, including 18S rRNA, ITS1-5.8SITS2 rRNA, 28S rRNA, and cox1 genes. The findings show that subclass Peniculia and family Parameciidae are monophyletic, while the Urocentrida family ranks as a subclass within Peniculia, in agreement with previous classifications. Additionally, discrepancies regarding genus Frontonia were identified, leading to proposals for revised species diagnoses.

Taxonomy of Three Oxytrichids (Protozoa, Ciliophora, Hypotrichia) With Establishment of the New Species Rubrioxytricha guangzhouensis spec. nov.

Xiaotian Luo et al.

Summary: Two oxytrichid ciliates from China, Oxytricha lithofera and Rubrioxytricha haematoplasma, were investigated based on living observations, protargol preparations, and molecular analyses. The study revealed distinct features of the Chinese populations and led to the establishment of a new species, Rubrioxytricha guangzhouensis, based on morphological and molecular differences.

Identification and infection mechanism of Tetrahymena vorax affecting the goldfish Carassius auratus

Wenyu Li et al.

Summary: Study on the ciliate Tetrahymena vorax responsible for tetrahymenosis in goldfish revealed large skin lesions and other symptoms on infected fish. Experimental results showed that T. vorax invades goldfish through injured surfaces.

Taxonomy, Ontogenesis and Evolutionary Relationships of the Algae-Bearing Ciliate Bourlandella viridis (Kahl, 1932) comb. nov., With Establishment of a New Genus and New Family (Protista, Ciliophora, Hypotrichia)

Wenya Song et al.

Summary: This study describes a poorly known organism in a Chinese population, suggesting it represents a new genus and new family potentially between two different groups. Molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed a close relationship with oxytrichids, indicating potential adaptability to different environmental conditions.
