Long-term variability in deposited fine sediment and macroinvertebrate communities across different land-use intensities in a regional set of New Zealand rivers

Noah G. Davis et al.

Summary: This study used a 5-year dataset from 46 rivers in Southland, New Zealand to investigate the relationship between fine sediment deposition and stream macroinvertebrates. It was found that medium-intensity catchments showed the greatest number of relationships between invertebrate metrics and sediment, and invertebrate metrics mainly responded negatively to increasing sediment in medium- and high-intensity catchments. Overall, sediment-specific metrics performed better than widely used counterparts, and the findings suggest that land-use intensity influences the multi-year dynamics of fine sediment deposition and stream invertebrate responses.

Abiotic predictors of fine sediment accumulation in lowland rivers

Morwenna McKenzie et al.

Summary: This study aims to further explore the environmental variables controlling sediment accumulation in lowland gravel bed rivers. The results show that flow variables have strong predictive power for sediment deposition metrics, while their predictive power for suspended sediment is poor. Organic content is relatively independent of total sediment quantity.

Temporal effects of fine sediment deposition on benthic macroinvertebrate community structure, function and biodiversity likely reflects landscape setting

Kate L. Mathers et al.

Summary: Excessive fine sediment deposition has negative effects on aquatic biodiversity, but the impacts vary depending on the landscape context. An experimental study conducted in Italy and the UK found that fine sediment clogging resulted in changes in both taxonomic and functional community composition. The dominant process driving these changes was nestedness. Different community richness metrics responded differently to fine sediment loading.

Submerged macrophytes affect the temporal variability of aquatic ecosystems

Moritz D. Lurig et al.

Summary: Through experimental research on submerged macrophytes, it was found that the impact of macrophytes on aquatic ecosystems varies over time, including effects on dissolved organic matter concentration and phytoplankton biomass. Macrophytes increased the variance of ecosystem metabolic rates and dissolved organic carbon composition, while also affecting the variability of phytoplankton biomass.

Invasive species influence macroinvertebrate biomonitoring tools and functional diversity in British rivers

Simone Guareschi et al.

Summary: This study explores the response of freshwater macroinvertebrate communities to biological invasion by examining the performance of biomonitoring tools and community functional indices before and after the colonization of the invasive species Dikerogammarus haemobaphes. Results show that the invasion by D. haemobaphes significantly reduces WHPT index and functional diversity metrics, suggesting it should be considered a significant pressure to riverine communities. The research highlights the importance of using community functional measures in characterizing the effects of invasive species and the need to consider the broader threats they pose to freshwater ecosystems.

Impacts of multiple anthropogenic stressors on stream macroinvertebrate community composition and functional diversity

Noel P. D. Juvigny-Khenafou et al.

Summary: This study found that deposited fine sediment and flow velocity reduction had the strongest impacts on invertebrate abundances and diversity, leading to a reduction in functional redundancy. The effects of stressors often varied between sampling occasions, complicating the prediction of multiple-stressor effects on communities. By combining community, trait, and functional diversity assessments, future research can improve our understanding of multiple-stressor effects and their interactions in running waters.

Beta-diversity and stressor specific index reveal patterns of macroinvertebrate community response to sediment flushing

Alberto Doretto et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of CSFOs on riverine biota, with a focus on benthic macroinvertebrate communities. The findings suggest that nestedness is the primary source of biological impairment caused by CSFOs, and that the SILTES index is effective in assessing and monitoring the effects of CSFOs, showing recovery within months after the events. This study highlights the importance of using ecological tools like SILTES to manage sediment-related activities in mountainous streams, with potential applications for managing disturbances in river environments globally.

Influence of river regulation and instream habitat on invertebrate assemblage' structure and function

Ana Raquel Calapez et al.

Summary: The study found distinct differences in taxonomic structure and trait composition of macroinvertebrate assemblages between regulated and unregulated flow sites, with the differences being more evident between different mesohabitats. Flow regulation effects were mainly detected in run-type mesohabitats, suggesting a selective macroinvertebrate assessment in these habitats would be valuable in detecting the impact of regulated flows on ecosystems impaired by dams. Additionally, respiration and locomotion traits were identified as potentially effective tools for identifying damming flow alterations.

Long-term river invertebrate community responses to groundwater and surface water management operations

J. C. White et al.

Summary: Groundwater and surface water management operations globally have transformed river flow regimes, impacting freshwater ecosystems. However, most relationships between flow alterations and ecology were not statistically significant. Some aquatic invertebrate communities displayed relative declines in response to severe groundwater abstraction and artificial hydrological inputs, with the strongest flow-ecology relationships recorded during spring months.

Anthropogenic impacts influence the functional traits of Chironomidae (Diptera) assemblages in a neotropical savanna river basin

Isabela Martins et al.

Summary: The study indicates that increased demands for water have negative impacts on water quality, availability, and biodiversity. Through research on Chironomidae insects, their important role in ecological assessment has been discovered, leading to potential improvements in assessing the effects of human disturbances on aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages.

Impacts of fine sediment input on river macroinvertebrates: the role of the abiotic characteristics at mesohabitat scale

Francesca Salmaso et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of extreme sediment input on benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in two mesohabitats of an Alpine river. The results showed that the physical structure of the mesohabitat played a crucial role in determining the response of benthic communities to siltation, with riffles being less impacted and recovering faster compared to glides. This research provides insights for improving the impact assessment of sediment input events in rivers, especially in the context of increasing frequency and intensity of severe rainfall events due to global warming.
