The Impact of Pain on Subsequent Effort and Cognitive Performance

Summary: The influence of pain on subsequent cognitive performance is examined in this study. Results showed that cognitive performance was moderately lower after a painful task compared to a non-painful task. However, the decrease in performance was not associated with a decrease in effort or an increase in cardiac reactivity. Additionally, higher pain ratings were related to lower self-reported capacity to perform the cognitive task. These findings highlight the complex relationship between pain, effort, and performance.

Summary: Functional cognitive disorders (FCD) have garnered increasing clinical interest in recent years due to their high prevalence among patients attending memory clinics. While empirical understanding of FCD is growing based on observational studies, theoretical understanding has been lacking. One novel suggestion posits FCD as metacognitive disorders, specifically disorders of metamemory. This metacognitive formulation of FCD may offer guidance for future hypothesis-driven research and management strategies despite its current lack of mechanistic sophistication.

Subjective cognitive complaints in patients with stress-related exhaustion disorder: a cross sectional study
