The Phenomenology and Neurobiology of Visual Distortions and Hallucinations in Schizophrenia: An Update

Steven M. Silverstein et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia is characterized by visual distortions in about 60% of cases, with visual hallucinations present in about 25-50% of cases. These symptoms have received relatively little attention in the literature due to the higher prevalence of auditory hallucinations in psychotic disorders. This study aims to address this gap by examining the nature, syndromes, cortical mechanisms, retinal changes, and relationship between visual processing and visual hallucinations in schizophrenia, proposing an updated model of VH mechanisms.
