Goal Choices Modify Frontotemporal Memory Representations

Aditya Srinivasan et al.

Summary: Adapting to changing circumstances requires memory of past choices and a method for choosing actions. The hippocampus (HPC) is important for remembering episodes, while the prefrontal cortex (PFC) helps guide memory retrieval. Previous research showed that PFC activity helps reactivate HPC representations of pending goal choices, but did not investigate frontotemporal interactions after choices. This study describes these interactions and shows that CA1 and PFC reciprocally modulate representations of each other both before and after goal choices.

Bias-free estimation of information content in temporally sparse neuronal activity

Liron Sheintuch et al.

Summary: Applying information theoretic measures to neuronal activity data can quantify the quality of neuronal encoding. However, there is typically an upward bias in the naive estimation of information content due to limited sample size, especially in Ca2+ imaging. This study introduces methods to correct for this bias and demonstrates their higher accuracy compared to previous methods. The bias-correction methods allow for accurate estimation of information content and uncover overlooked properties of neural coding.

An in silico model for determining the influence of neuronal co-activity on rodent spatial behavior

Aditya Srinivasan et al.

Summary: This study presents a method based on state space modeling to accurately reconstruct neuronal spike trains and animal spatial behavior. The method utilizes empirically derived network connectivity to constrain biophysical parameters and allows quantification of the contribution of specific unit activity and co-activity to animal spatial behavior.

Unsupervised Methods for Detection of Neural States: Case Study of Hippocampal-Amygdala Interactions

Francesco Cocina et al.

Summary: The hippocampus and amygdala are crucial brain regions for memory and learning processes, and analyzing local field potentials can help differentiate neural states. The topological causality technique is used to infer directed interactions between these two regions, demonstrating the importance of quantifying functional interactions in discriminating external labels.

Multiple time-scales of decision-making in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex

Wenbo Tang et al.

Summary: The prefrontal cortex and hippocampus play crucial roles in memory-guided decision-making, with the hippocampus encoding alternatives for deliberation and the prefrontal cortex predicting upcoming choices. Both regions maintain representations of current choices during navigation, but these representations are preserved to guide ongoing behavior during error trials. Interactions between hippocampal and prefrontal sequences at multiple timescales support memory-guided decision-making.

Between-subject prediction reveals a shared representational geometry in the rodent hippocampus

Hung-Tu Chen et al.

Summary: The study shows that successful cross-subject prediction of hippocampal ensemble activity patterns can be achieved by constructing a common neural activity representation space and aligning neural activity using geometric operations between rats. This challenges the idea that predicting hippocampal encoding of experiences across subjects is difficult.

Geometry of abstract learned knowledge in the hippocampus

Edward H. Nieh et al.

Summary: Hippocampal neurons encode both physical and abstract variables, and research using two-photon calcium imaging showed that individual neurons in the dorsal hippocampus jointly encode accumulated evidence with spatial position in mice performing a decision-making task. The findings suggest that neural activity in the hippocampus is constrained to a low-dimensional manifold where physical and abstract variables are jointly mapped in an orderly manner.

The population doctrine in cognitive neuroscience

R. Becket Ebitz et al.

Summary: Neurophysiology is shifting towards population-level thinking, which has had a significant impact in motor neuroscience and holds promise for addressing cognitive questions. Core concepts such as state spaces, manifolds, coding dimensions, subspaces, and dynamics provide a foundation for exploring cognition through population-level thinking. The progress and potential of population-level thinking in cognitive neuroscience is demonstrated in studies investigating attention, working memory, decision-making, executive function, learning, and reward processing.
