The serotonin theory of depression: a systematic umbrella review of the evidence

Joanna Moncrieff et al.

Summary: The serotonin hypothesis of depression, which suggests that depression is caused by lowered serotonin activity or concentrations, lacks consistent evidence based on the synthesis and evaluation of research in this field. This umbrella review found no substantial association between serotonin and depression, while suggesting that long-term antidepressant use may reduce serotonin concentration.

Occupational change on the dualised Swedish labour market

Tomas Berglund et al.

Summary: The Swedish labor market exhibits tendencies of both dualization and polarization, with an increase in temporary employment and both low- and high-paid jobs while middle-paid jobs decrease. This study explores the relationship between changes in occupational structure and the distribution of temporary employment. The findings show a pattern of upgrading in the overall structure, but also reveal tendencies of polarization when analyzing permanent and temporary employment separately.

Exploring multidimensional operationalizations of precarious employment in Swedish register data - a typological approach and a summative score approach

Johanna Jonsson et al.

Summary: This study explored multidimensional operationalizations of precarious employment in Swedish register data, identifying three types of PE and highlighting that females, young individuals, those with lower education levels, and foreigners are more prone to precarious employment. The operationalizations could be useful for countries with similar data structures.

Reasons for presenteeism in different occupational branches in Sweden: a population based cross-sectional study

Staffan Marklund et al.

Summary: The study found that employees handling people had the highest prevalence of presenteeism, with the most common reason being not wanting to burden colleagues, while employees handling things and symbols cited not having others to carry out their responsibilities as the most common reason. Even after controlling for other factors, the differences in reasons for presenteeism between the three occupational categories remained significant.

Low-quality employment trajectories and risk of common mental disorders, substance use disorders and suicide attempt: a longitudinal study of the Swedish workforce

Johanna Jonsson et al.

Summary: High-quality longitudinal evidence on the mental health risks associated with low-quality employment trajectories is scarce. This study in Sweden found that low-quality employment trajectories increased the risk of common mental disorders, substance use disorders, and suicide attempts. There may be differential effects on men and women, especially in terms of self-employment. Policies focusing on maintaining high-quality employment characteristics are crucial in reducing these risks.

Gender equality in domestic work and sickness absence-a population-based study on women and men in Sweden

C. Staland-Nyman et al.

Summary: This study found that women reported lower levels of gender equality in domestic work compared to men, and satisfaction with division of domestic work was negatively associated with sickness absence among men. Work-family conflicts were associated with higher odds ratios for sickness absence in both men and women. More research on the relationship between gender equality in domestic work and sickness absence is needed for future prevention activities.
