Epidemiology, Etiology, and Treatment of Gastroparesis: Real-World Evidence From a Large US National Claims Database

Yizhou Ye et al.

Summary: This study utilized a large US claims database to investigate the prevalence, patient demographics, and disease etiology of gastroparesis in the US population. It found that diabetes was the most common etiology of gastroparesis and patients had a high comorbidity burden. Wider availability of objective gastric emptying measures and education for medical professionals are needed to improve understanding of gastroparesis epidemiology.

Electroacupuncture ameliorates intestinal inflammation by activating α7nAChR-mediated JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway in postoperative ileus

Na-Na Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigated how electroacupuncture stimulation at the hindlimb region ameliorates inflammation in postoperative ileus (POI). Results showed that electroacupuncture suppressed intestinal inflammation and promoted gastrointestinal motility by activating the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (alpha 7nAChR)-mediated JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway in macrophages. Furthermore, hindlimb region stimulation inhibited the expression of GABA(A) receptor in dorsal motor nucleus of vagal (DMV) neurons, leading to suppression of inflammation via vagal efferent output.
