Improvements in cognitive function and quantitative sleep electroencephalogram in obstructive sleep apnea after six months of continuous positive airway pressure treatment

Angela L. D'Rozario et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on cognitive function and sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The results showed that after 6 months of CPAP treatment, cognitive function improved and sleep EEG features were enhanced. These findings suggest that the cognitive deficits and altered brain electrophysiology observed in untreated OSA can be reversed with treatment.

Orally administered cannabidiol does not produce false-positive tests for Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol on the Securetec DrugWipe® 5S or Drager DrugTest® 5000

Danielle McCartney et al.

Summary: Orally administered CBD does not produce false-positive tests for THC on standard oral fluid testing devices, indicating a low likelihood of individuals using CBD-only products being falsely accused of driving under the influence of cannabis.

Effects of Cannabidiol on Exercise Physiology and Bioenergetics: A Randomised Controlled Pilot Trial

Ayshe Sahinovic et al.

Summary: This pilot study investigated the effects of acute, oral CBD treatment on physiological and psychological responses to aerobic exercise. The results suggested that CBD may increase oxygen uptake, pleasure ratings, and lactate concentrations during exercise, while reducing endogenous cannabinoid concentrations. The study suggests that CBD may alter some key physiological and psychological responses to exercise without impairing performance. Larger studies are needed to confirm and further understand these preliminary findings.

A validated method for the simultaneous quantification of cannabidiol, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, and their metabolites in human plasma and application to plasma samples from an oral cannabidiol open-label trial

Richard C. Kevin et al.

Summary: In this study, a method for the simultaneous quantification of CBD, THC and their major Phase I metabolites was developed, optimized and validated according to FDA guidelines. The method is accurate, reproducible, sensitive, and can be carried out in high-throughput 96-well formats for larger scale clinical trials. Deuterated internal standards were crucial to account for variable matrix effects between plasma lots. The application of the method to plasma samples from individuals undergoing oral CBD treatment in an open-label trial of CBD effects in anxiety disorders demonstrated its immediate utility for ongoing and upcoming clinical trials, with potential to accommodate additional metabolites as analytical reference materials become commercially available.

Determining the magnitude and duration of acute Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC)-induced driving and cognitive impairment: A systematic and meta-analytic review

Danielle McCartney et al.

Summary: The study found that cannabis has acute effects on driving performance and related cognitive skills, with some measures showing impairment. Long-term cannabis users experienced less impairment compared to other users, and factors such as ingestion method, dosage, and time affected the duration of Delta(9)-THC's effects. The recommendations suggest waiting at least 5 hours after inhaling cannabis before engaging in safety-sensitive tasks.

The social and economic cost of sleep disorders

Jared Streatfeild et al.

Summary: The study estimated the economic cost of common sleep disorders in Australia for 2019-2020, with a total cost of $35.4 billion, of which financial costs accounted for $10.0 billion and nonfinancial costs accounted for $25.4 billion. The results suggest that the economic costs associated with sleep disorders are substantial, with the financial component equivalent to 0.73% of Australian gross domestic product.

The social and economic cost of sleep disorders

Jared Streatfeild et al.

Summary: The study estimated the economic cost of common sleep disorders in Australia for 2019-2020, totaling $35.4 billion, with obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome being the main contributors. Financial costs accounted for $10.0 billion, equivalent to 0.73% of Australian GDP, while the nonfinancial cost was $25.4 billion, representing 3.2% of total Australian burden of disease. The study suggests greater expenditure on detection, treatment, and prevention of sleep disorders is warranted.
