Pre-exposure prophylaxis in real life: experience from a prospective, observational and demonstration project among men who have sex with men in Benin, West Africa

Souleymane Diabate et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the feasibility and relevance of implementing oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for men who have sex with men (MSM) in sub-Saharan Africa. The results showed that oral PrEP introduction in routine practice in West Africa is feasible and does not result in a significant increase in condomless sex among MSM. However, additional interventions may be needed to optimize the benefits of PrEP due to the high HIV incidence.

High-risk human papillomavirus genotype distribution among women living with and at risk for HIV in Africa

Mkunde Chachage et al.

Summary: This study evaluated HR-HPV genotypes among women with and without HIV in four African countries to inform cervical cancer preventive strategies. The results showed that HR-HPV was more common in WLWH, particularly among women with low CD4(+) cell count. Scaling up HPV vaccination and developing vaccines with broader activity against less common HR-HPV types may improve cervical cancer prevention in Africa.

Condomless receptive anal intercourse is associated with markers of mucosal inflammation in a cohort of men who have sex with men in Atlanta, Georgia

Colleen F. Kelley et al.

Summary: This study compared the rectal mucosal immune environment between men who have anal intercourse and those who do not, finding higher expression of neutrophils and epithelial cell proliferation in the former group. Understanding the distribution of inflammatory mediators in the mucosa can enhance knowledge of early events in HIV transmission.

Sexual Positioning Practices and Anal Human Papillomavirus Infection Among Young Men Who Have Sex with Men and Transgender Women-Chicago, Illinois, 2016-2018

Ethan Morgan et al.

Summary: This study found that individuals who engage in anal receptive sex have a higher prevalence of any HPV infection among men who have sex with men and transgender women. However, receiving the HPV vaccine can reduce the risk of infection with 4-valent HPV types regardless of sexual practices.
