Educational level and tuberculosis mortality in Colombia: growing inequalities and stagnation in reduction

Salome Valencia-Aguirre et al.

Summary: This study aims to describe the role of educational inequalities in adult tuberculosis mortality in Colombia. The study found that tuberculosis mortality rates were higher among those with lower educational levels, and the inequalities were increasing. This suggests the need for comprehensive strategies to reduce tuberculosis by addressing social determinants and implementing health education strategies.

Integrating tuberculosis and noncommunicable diseases care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs): A systematic review

Chuan De Foo et al.

Summary: This study reviews integrated TB and NCD services in LMICs and provides recommendations for future implementation, finding that the deepest levels of integration offer the most benefits to patients and the health system. The WHO's health systems framework was used to map facilitators and barriers in implementing integrated programmes. Integration of TB and NCD services is crucial for tackling the burden of diseases effectively and high-quality research is needed for future programmatic evaluation.

Evolution and spread of a highly drug resistant strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Papua New Guinea

Arnold Bainomugisa et al.

Summary: The study examined the transmission and drug resistance of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Papua New Guinea, revealing that drug resistance among major clades of Beijing strains threatens the success of DR-TB treatment. The National Capital District in Papua New Guinea had a high proportion of genomic clusters, reflecting its potential role in the spread of drug-resistant strains. Detection of resistance to new drugs like bedaquiline highlights the importance of understanding complete drug resistance profiles for optimal treatment selection.

Global, regional, and national sex differences in the global burden of tuberculosis by HIV status, 1990-2019: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Jorge R. Ledesma et al.

Summary: Assessing the burden of tuberculosis by sex is crucial. There are significant differences in mortality and incidence rates between males and females among HIV-negative individuals globally, with higher rates among males. Among HIV-positive individuals, females have a higher mortality and incidence rates. Controlling risk factors such as smoking, alcohol use, and diabetes is important in reducing tuberculosis mortality among males.

The Impact of Alcohol Use Disorder on Tuberculosis: A Review of the Epidemiology and Potential Immunologic Mechanisms

Gregory W. Wigger et al.

Summary: Globally, an estimated 107 million people have an alcohol use disorder (AUD) leading to 2.8 million premature deaths each year. Alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of tuberculosis (TB), independent of shared risk factors. Alcohol impairs lung immunity and may facilitate Mycobacterium tuberculosis growth.

The global burden of disease attributable to high fasting plasma glucose in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2019: An updated analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Ruyi Liang et al.

Summary: This study used data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 to evaluate the spatial pattern and temporal trend of disease burden attributed to high fasting plasma glucose (HFPG) from 1990 to 2019. The results showed that globally, the numbers of deaths and DALYs attributed to HFPG have doubled over the past few decades, particularly in males and in regions with middle socio-demographic index (SDI). This highlights the importance of taking necessary measures to control the growing burden attributed to HFPG.

Association between Gastric Cancer Mortality-to-Incidence Ratio and Human Development Index: Evidence from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016

Maryam Nouri et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the trend of gastric cancer mortality-to-incidence ratio (GCMIR) in different super regions, finding Sub-Saharan Africa as the only region with a positive slope of GCMIR and high-income countries with the greatest decreasing slope. Additionally, a negative association between GCMIR and HDI was observed in the study period. These findings suggest that gastric cancer has social determinants that can be more controllable with improvement in economic status and other social factors.

Type 2 diabetes attributable to PM2.5: A global burden study from 1990 to 2019

Ce Liu et al.

Summary: According to the analysis of data from the GBD2019 database, the global burden of T2D attributed to PM2.5 has significantly increased from 1990 to 2019, particularly in the elderly, men, Africa, Asia, and low-middle SDI regions. However, declining trends were observed in regions with high SDI such as North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and others.

Diabetes among tuberculosis patients and its impact on tuberculosis treatment in South Asia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Sanju Gautam et al.

Summary: The burden of diabetes among TB patients in South Asia is high, with patients having TB and diabetes at higher risk of treatment failure and mortality compared to those with TB alone. Planning and implementing screening for diabetes and preventive strategies for both TB and diabetes are urgently needed.

Summary: The study found a global upward trend in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) until 1996, followed by a downward trend. Nearly all countries experienced a significant decline in mortality rates from 1990 to 2017. Developed countries saw a faster reduction in incidence and mortality rates compared to developing countries, while the global MIR had a slight decrease with developing nations showing a more gradual decline.

Minimizing the impact of the triple burden of COVID-19, tuberculosis and HIV on health services in sub-Saharan Africa

Jean B. Nachega et al.

Summary: This perspective discusses the impact of COVID-19 on TB/HIV health services and approaches to mitigate the growing burden of these three colliding epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa. The COVID-19 pandemic has added an additional burden to already overstretched health systems in SSA, and modelling studies predict significant increases in associated morbidity and mortality over the next five years. Limited empirical evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 coinfections with TB and HIV are associated with increased mortality risk in SSA, highlighting the need for further research on the impact of COVID-19 on communicable diseases and non-communicable disease comorbidities in the region.

Summary: Uzbekistan faces a significant burden of drug-resistant tuberculosis, with stable numbers of MDR-TB cases but increasing cases of XDR-TB annually. Treatment success rates for MDR-TB have been decreasing while success rates for XDR-TB have been increasing. Risk factors for unfavorable outcomes in drug-resistant TB patients in Tashkent city include XDR-TB, male sex, older age, previous TB treatment, alcohol abuse, and comorbidities.
