Impact of periodontitis on gingival crevicular fluid miRNAs profiles associated with cardiovascular disease risk

Gaetano Isola et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of periodontitis on the expression of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) miRNAs associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The results showed that periodontitis and its extent were significant predictors of GCF miRNAs concentration. The findings highlight the importance of periodontitis in relation to CVD risk.

The relationship between glycated hemoglobin level and the stage of periodontitis in individuals without diabetes

Arwa Banjar et al.

Summary: Glycemic control is important for the relationship between periodontitis and diabetes. A study investigated the association between periodontitis stage and HbA1c levels in normoglycemic patients. 135 patients without diabetes were included, and higher HbA1c levels were associated with different stages of periodontitis. Periodontitis was significantly associated with elevated HbA1c levels in patients not previously diagnosed with diabetes, especially in stage III and IV periodontitis patients.

Proportional relationship between periodontal inflamed surface area, clinical attachment loss, and glycated hemoglobin level in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus on insulin therapy and on oral antidiabetic therapy

Simna Pattayil et al.

Summary: This study found that the prevalence and severity of periodontitis were lower in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus on insulin therapy compared to those on oral antidiabetic drug therapy. There was also a proportional relationship between periodontal inflamed surface area and clinical attachment loss with glycated hemoglobin level.

IDF Diabetes Atlas: Global, regional and country-level diabetes prevalence estimates for 2021 and projections for 2045

Hong Sun et al.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and country-level estimates of diabetes prevalence and health expenditures for 2021 and projections for 2045. The global prevalence of diabetes is increasing and is expected to have the greatest relative increase in middle-income countries. Diabetes-related health expenditures are also projected to rise.

Impact of systemic factors in shaping the periodontal microbiome

Flavia Teles et al.

Summary: Next-generation sequencing platforms have opened up new opportunities for studying oral microbiology in relation to oral and systemic health. These platforms have allowed for large-scale surveys of oral microbes, as well as exploration of the impact of systemic factors on the periodontal microbiome, including diseases, conditions, ethnicity, and genetics. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the systemic factors that shape the periodontal microbiome for patient management and treatment.

Relationship between periodontitis and microangiopathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a meta-analysis

Xuexue Zhang et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis included 13 cross-sectional studies involving 10,570 participants. The results showed an association between periodontitis and type 2 diabetic microangiopathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy, but not with neuropathy. Subgroup analysis in Asian and North American populations, as well as in groups with sample sizes larger or smaller than 500, confirmed the association between periodontitis and type 2 diabetic microangiopathy.

Severity of Alveolar Bone Loss in Control and Uncontrolled Type II Diabetics

Afaq Farooq et al.

Summary: In this study on type 2 diabetic patients, a strong association was found between controlled and uncontrolled glucose levels and the severity of alveolar bone loss. When HbA1c levels increased, there was a higher rate of bone loss in both male and female patients. Patients with poorly controlled HbA1c levels experienced severe bone loss.

Local and systemic mechanisms linking periodontal disease and inflammatory comorbidities

George Hajishengallis et al.

Summary: Periodontitis is causally linked to the development of other chronic inflammatory diseases outside the oral mucosa, and intervention studies have shown that local treatment of periodontitis can ameliorate surrogate markers of comorbid conditions. Experimental animal studies have further strengthened the potential causal link by establishing biologically plausible and clinically consistent mechanisms. Understanding the impact of disseminated periodontal pathogens and systemic inflammation associated with periodontitis on extra-oral pathologies may lead to new therapeutic options to reduce the risk of periodontitis-associated comorbidities.
