Moderate temperature reduction is sufficient for prevention of 5-fluorouracil-induced oral mucositis: an experimental in vivo study in rats

J. Walladbegi et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed an animal model to investigate the early events of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis (OM). The results showed that moderate temperature reduction can reduce the early events preceding clinically established OM.

Efficacy of a novel device for cryoprevention of oral mucositis: a randomized, blinded, multicenter, parallel group, phase 3 trial

Java Walladbegi et al.

Summary: Cryoprevention using ice is an effective strategy to prevent chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, but may cause adverse reactions. In this study, ice and a novel intraoral cooling device were found to be equally effective for the entire study population, but the cooling device showed better results in reducing oral mucositis scores for the lymphoma group.

Can cryoprevention of oral mucositis be obtained at a higher temperature?

A. Mahdi et al.

Summary: This study found that intraoral cooling with an intraoral cooling device set to 15 degrees Celsius was better tolerated compared to 8 degrees Celsius, although the reduction in intraoral mucosal temperature was marginally different and may not impact cryoprevention of oral mucositis.
