Laminoplasty versus Laminectomy in the Treatment of Primary Spinal Cord Tumors in Adult Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Observational Studies

Vadim Byvaltsev et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of laminoplasty (LP) and laminectomy (LE) for adult patients with primary spinal cord tumors (PSCTs). LP is not widely used in the neurosurgical community, despite its advantages. The efficacy of LP vs. LE remains controversial. A total of seven observational studies with 540 patients were included. There were no significant differences in operation time and complications between LP and LE groups. The LP group had a shorter hospital stay and lower postoperative spinal deformity rate compared to the LE group. However, these findings are limited by the low quality of available evidence, and further randomized controlled trials are needed for comparison.

Biomechanical evaluation of reconstruction of the posterior complex in restorative laminoplasty with miniplates

Jianmin Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the biomechanical effects of different types of miniplates in restorative laminoplasty through static and dynamic compression tests. The results showed that H-shaped miniplates were superior to two-hole miniplates and L-shaped miniplates in maintaining spinal canal enlargement and spinal stability, and exhibited better mechanical strength, fatigue stability, and ultimate load.

Laminectomy Versus Laminectomy with Fusion for Intradural Extramedullary Tumors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Kevin Mo et al.

Summary: There were no differences in postoperative outcomes between laminectomy and laminectomy with fixation/fusion for the treatment of intradural extramedullary tumors (IDEMTs). However, laminectomy had a higher rate of postoperative sagittal instability compared to laminectomy with fixation/fusion.

Laminectomy Versus Laminectomy with Fusion for Intradural Extramedullary Tumors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Kevin Mo et al.

Summary: The study compared outcomes between laminectomy and laminectomy with fixation/fusion for treating intradural extramedullary tumors. Laminectomy was found to have higher rates of postoperative sagittal instability compared with LF, with no significant differences in other outcomes. TL may result in higher sagittal instability rates compared with PL.

Vertebral plate and ligament composite laminoplasty in spinal cord tumor surgery: Analysis of 94 patients

Xu Hao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the value and long-term effects of laminectomy or laminoplasty in spinal cord tumor surgery. The results showed no significant differences between laminectomy and laminoplasty groups in terms of operative time, infection rate, and cerebrospinal fluid infection. Laminoplasty was found to be valuable in reducing spinal deformity.
