Sonodynamic therapy for gliomas

Adomas Bunevicius et al.

Summary: Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is a promising treatment approach for gliomas, involving the generation of reactive oxygen species and free radicals, as well as physical destabilization of cell membrane leading to cell death. Pre-clinical studies and animal models have shown improved tumor control and longer survival in animals treated with SDT. Clinical trials of SDT in patients with gliomas and other malignant brain tumors are currently underway.

Current Landscape of Sonodynamic Therapy for Treating Cancer

Toshihiro Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: Ultrasound technology has advanced in the treatment of cancer, particularly with the development of sonodynamic therapy using chemical sonosensitizers and focused ultrasound to target cancer cells. The combination of ultrasound and chemical sonosensitizers can effectively disrupt tumor growth, induce cell death, and trigger an immune response. While recent advancements have improved cancer treatment options, a cure for the disease remains elusive, underscoring the need for continued research and innovation in this field.

Current Limitations of Intraoperative Ultrasound in Brain Tumor Surgery

Andrej Steno et al.

Summary: Despite the frequent description of the benefits of intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS), limited data are available on its drawbacks. Some of the most important limitations include suboptimal imaging, various types of artifacts, challenging patient positioning, and the absence of an optimal probe for certain surgeries. To reduce these limitations, it is necessary to use ultrasound technology suitable for specific procedures and proper scanning techniques. Future trends in IOUS imaging optimization are also discussed in this review.

Elevated cellular PpIX potentiates sonodynamic therapy in a mouse glioma stem cell-bearing glioma model by downregulating the Akt/NF-κB/MDR1 pathway

Kenji Shono et al.

Summary: Elevating cellular PpIX levels by down-regulating MDR1 through the Akt/NF-kappa B pathway can enhance the anti-tumor effects of SDT, particularly in highly invasive GBM. This strategy, which involves blocking the Akt/NF-kappa B pathway, could be a promising therapeutic approach for GBM.
