Early applications of ChatGPT in medical practice, education and research

Sam Sedaghat

Summary: ChatGPT, released in late 2022, quickly gained popularity as an AI system that generates written responses by utilizing internet sources. Its performance on medical exams is comparable to that of third-year medical students, and it can produce acceptable academic abstracts and reviews. However, concerns arise regarding its handling of harmful content, misinformation, and plagiarism, so caution is advised for professional academic writing. While ChatGPT has the potential to enhance healthcare provider-patient interaction, limitations persist in understanding complex tasks like human anatomy. Although it can simplify radiological reports, there is a risk of incorrect statements and missing medical information. To ensure regular use in medicine, further improvements are necessary for ChatGPT.
