Enoxaparin may be associated with lower rates of mortality than unfractionated heparin in neurocritical and surgical patients

Sophie Samuel et al.

Summary: The study compared the use of unfractionated heparin (UFH) and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) for preventing venous thromboembolism (VTE) in critically ill patients. UFH and LMWH showed similar rates of all-cause mortality and the prevalence of VTE, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and hospital length of stay (LOS) in the cohort. However, subgroup analysis indicated that neuro-critical and surgical patients who received UFH had a higher rate of mortality compared to those who received LMWH.

Performance Comparison Between SURPAS and ACS NSQIP Surgical Risk Calculator in Pulmonary Resection

Neel P. Chudgar et al.

Summary: The study compared the observed and predicted outcomes after pulmonary resections between SURPAS and NSQIP SRC. Results showed no significant differences in discrimination performance between the two models for most complications, except for renal failure. The NSQIP SRC performed better in discriminating the risk of renal failure compared to SURPAS.

Diagnostic Laparoscopy Improves Staging of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma With Routine Positron Emission Tomography Imaging

R. Taylor Ripley et al.

Summary: This study investigated whether DL improves staging for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma and found that DL can provide more accurate prediction for patient selection and preoperative assessment. According to the results, the majority of patients were able to undergo successful surgical resection after DL.

The effects of early enteral nutrition on mortality after major emergency abdominal surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis with Trial Sequential Analysis

Jakob Burcharth et al.

Summary: Early oral or enteral nutrition (EEN) after major emergency surgery is associated with reduced mortality, but more high-quality data are needed to determine the optimal timing and composition of nutrition before conclusive effects of EEN can be established.
