Summary: This study examined the frequency and content of messages related to pharmacological and evidence-based, non-pharmaceutical treatments in direct-to-consumer advertising for prescription drugs treating chronic diseases in the United States. The findings showed variations in the portrayal of diet and exercise as important factors in different disease advertisements, but none of the advertisements presented them as alternatives to medication.
