Male Fertility and Physical Exercise

Federico Belladelli et al.

Summary: According to existing studies, sedentary behavior contributes to male infertility, and the relationship between physical activity (PA) and male infertility, semen characteristics, and pregnancy rates is complex. While some forms of physical activity showed improvements in pregnancy rates, others did not consistently improve semen quality. More intense exercise and certain types of exercise may even impair male fertility. Further research, particularly randomized trials, is necessary to investigate the specific effects of different forms of exercise on semen parameters and reproductive outcomes.

The Renaissance of Male Infertility Management in the Golden Age of Andrology

Aldo E. Calogero et al.

Summary: Infertility affects nearly 186 million people worldwide, with male infertility accounting for about half of the cases. There has been a decline in sperm concentration and total count over the past four decades, emphasizing the need for further research in Andrology.

OXIDATIVE STRESS AND REPRODUCTIVE FUNCTION: Sperm telomeres, oxidative stress, and infertility

Aron Moazamian et al.

Summary: This review discusses the impact of oxidative stress on sperm telomere function and its association with fertility. It has been found that oxidative stress can lead to telomere shortening and dysfunction, and may be related to fertility outcomes in assisted reproductive technology.

Gut microbiota in human metabolic health and disease

Yong Fan et al.

Summary: The intestinal microbiota plays a significant role in human metabolic health, potentially contributing to the development of common metabolic disorders when dysregulated. Current research is shifting towards cause-and-effect studies and utilizing high-throughput human multi-omics data to identify potential molecular mechanisms behind these associations.

Large-scale association analyses identify host factors influencing human gut microbiome composition

Alexander Kurilshikov et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant effects of host genetic variation on microbial composition, with the lactase (LCT) gene locus showing an age-dependent association with Bifidobacterium abundance. Other associations, while suggestive, were enriched for taxa with high heritability and for genes expressed in the intestine and brain.

Summary: This pilot study represents the first comprehensive investigation into the microbiome in male infertility. These findings provide the foundation for future investigations to explore causality and identify novel microbiome-based diagnostics and therapeutics for men with this complex and emotionally devastating disease.

Lack of association between single polymorphic variants of the mitochondrial nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase 3, and 4L (MT-ND3 and MT-ND4L) and male infertility

Fatina W. Dahadhah et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between polymorphisms in mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunits 3 and 4L (MT-ND3 and MT-ND4L) and male infertility, but found no significant association. However, the presence of rs28358278 genotype in the MT-ND3 gene was reported in the subfertile group, suggesting a possible role in male infertility. Further studies are needed to evaluate these findings.

European Association of Urology Guidelines on Male Sexual and Reproductive Health: 2021 Update on Male Infertility

Summary: The latest guidelines from the European Association of Urology recommend comprehensive urological evaluation for infertile men to identify and treat modifiable causes of infertility, as well as to monitor their risk for cardiovascular disease and cancer. However, there is still insufficient evidence to support the routine use of some treatments and surgical interventions in clinical practice.
