Novel Diagnostic Biomarkers in Colorectal Cancer

Aneta L. Zygulska et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer death worldwide, and early diagnosis is crucial for improving survival rates. Current diagnostic methods have suboptimal accuracy, while new molecular noninvasive tests based on CRC alterations are more sensitive and specific. Identifying ideal diagnostic biomarkers remains a challenge.

Investigation of miRNA expression profiles using cohort samples reveals potential early detectability of colorectal cancers by serum miR-26a-5p before clinical diagnosis

Asahi Hishida et al.

Summary: This study investigated the early detectability of colorectal cancer using miRNAs, finding that miR-26a-5p may serve as a potential marker for early detection of CRC. The study used clinical samples and validated the results through RT-qPCR analysis, demonstrating high diagnostic accuracy. Further examination with pre-clinical cohort samples also showed promising predictability of advanced CRC incidence.

MicroRNA Expression Profiling Predicts Nodal Status and Disease Recurrence in Patients Treated with Curative Intent for Colorectal Cancer

Matthew G. Davey et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the role of mi(cro)RNAs as biomarkers in predicting nodal status and recurrence in colorectal cancer patients. The results showed that aberrant expression of miR-21 and miR-135b was associated with increased nodal stage, while increased expression of miR-195 predicted the time to disease recurrence. These findings support the use of miRNA expression profiling in personalizing therapeutic decision making.

MicroRNAs Are Key Molecules Involved in the Gene Regulation Network of Colorectal Cancer

Fangfang Yang et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a common type of cancer and a leading cause of mortality worldwide. MicroRNAs play important roles in the development and progression of colorectal cancer, serving as clinical biomarkers and therapeutic targets. However, the complex network of miRNA/target regulation in colorectal cancer remains unclear.

Clinical Updates for Colon Cancer Care in 2022

Jesus C. Fabregas et al.

Summary: Colon cancer requires better screening and treatment options, especially with the rising incidence in the young population. Circulating tumor DNA and immunotherapy offer potential advancements in treatment, but face challenges in broader efficacy. Targeted therapies are a viable option for patients with poor prognosis.

MALAT1-miRNAs network regulate thymidylate synthase and affect 5FU-based chemotherapy

Janusz Matuszyk

Summary: The aim of this study is to elucidate the miRNAs and lncRNAs network that regulates the level of TYMS-encoded protein. Several miRNAs targeting TYMS mRNA have been identified in colon cancers, with some showing experimental confirmation of downregulation by lncRNA MALAT1.

Assessment of a Serum Microrna Risk Score for Colorectal Cancer among Participants of Screening Colonoscopy at Various Stages of Colorectal Carcinogenesis

Janhavi R. Raut et al.

Summary: This study validated a serum miR-score that accurately predicts the occurrence of colorectal cancer, and examined its distribution during different stages of colorectal carcinogenesis. The results showed that the miR-score was significantly higher in the advanced colorectal adenoma group compared to the non-advanced adenoma group and the colorectal cancer group, with no significant difference between the non-advanced adenoma group and the group without colorectal neoplasms. Additionally, the miR-score was inversely associated with colorectal adenoma and colorectal cancer, and positively associated with non-advanced adenoma.

Biological Implications and Clinical Potential of Metastasis-Related miRNA in Colorectal Cancer

Liaoran Niu et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer with high mortality rates, mainly attributed to metastasis. MicroRNAs play a significant role in manipulating malignant phenotypes in CRC, and certain miRNAs related to metastasis have potential as biomarkers or therapeutic targets. Further research is needed to translate these findings into clinical applications.

miR-17-5p drives G2/M-phase accumulation by directly targeting CCNG2 and is related to recurrence of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Qiang Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that miR-17-5p expression was significantly increased in HNSCC tissues and cell lines, and it is associated with recurrence in HNSCC patients. Silencing miR-17-5p blocked HNSCC cells in G2/M phase, while its overexpression promoted cell cycle progression. It was confirmed that miR-17-5p negatively regulated CCNG2 mRNA and protein expression by directly targeting its 3'UTR.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Summary: The promoter methylation of FP metabolizing and COX2 genes has a significant impact on the expression and treatment outcome of CRC patients.
