Sarah Alharthi

Summary: Fabrications of a new mesoporous silica adsorbent (MMCS@phosphonate) was synthesized and applied for efficient removal of thorium ions from acidic solutions. The adsorption process is rapid and can be well described by the Langmuir equation, with a maximum sorption capacity of 120 mg/g. The mesoporous sorbent can be regenerated with nitric acid and shows potential for practical applications.

Assessment of natural radionuclides and heavy metals contamination to the environment: Case study of Malaysian unregulated tin-tailing processing industry

Muhammad Abdullah Rahmat et al.

Summary: The tin tailing processing industry in Malaysia has shown a lack of regard for material management and working environment safety, resulting in harmful effects on the environment and workers due to radiation and heavy metal exposure. The study found significant contamination and enrichment in soil and sediment, which could potentially lead to adverse health effects for workers.

Modification of Clinoptilolite as a Robust Adsorbent for Highly-Efficient Removal of Thorium (IV) from Aqueous Solutions

Abdulrahman Masoud Alotaibi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the adsorption of thorium from aqueous solutions using natural and modified zeolites. It was found that the modification of the natural zeolite with sulphate and phosphate increases its adsorption capacity of thorium but reduces its specific surface area. The adsorption experiments showed that the Langmuir isotherm model correlates better with the adsorption of thorium onto the zeolites compared to the Freundlich isotherm model.

The impact of unregulated industrial tin-tailing processing in Malaysia: Past, present and way forward

Muhammad Abdullah Rahmat et al.

Summary: The utilization of heavy minerals from tin tailing processing in Malaysia has contributed to waste utilization, but it has also directly impacted radiation safety and environmental sustainability. Despite exceeding the regulatory limit of radiation exposure, the industry's response to address the issue has been stagnant. Other countries have successfully minimized the environmental and radiological effects of the industry by enacting comprehensive guides, laws, and heavy fines. Therefore, establishing a robust set of laws and regulations is crucial in managing the local tailing processing industry.

Zn2+ and Cd2+ removal from wastewater using clinoptilolite as adsorbent

Camilla Galletti et al.

Summary: Many industries discharge wastewater containing heavy metals, which must be treated to remove the pollutants. Activated carbon adsorption is commonly used but is expensive, leading to research on low-cost alternatives like zeolites. Among them, clinoptilolite shows high selectivity for heavy metal ions, especially cadmium.

Summary: This paper presents a systematic review of micro-modular thorium-fueled high temperature reactors with duplex fuel pellet design, discussing the advantages of using thorium and proposing a new TRISO fuel based on duplex pellet designs. The unconventional characteristics of the duplex pellets may suit the HTR burnup profile better, enabling longer operation of the reactor. The paper provides justification for detailed technical investigations of the proposed reactor design.

Separation of Radionuclides from a Rare Earth-Containing Solution by Zeolite Adsorption

Deniz Talan et al.

Summary: The demand for rare earth elements in industry calls for new or alternative sources, with studies showing the feasibility of using coal and its byproducts. However, the presence of radioactive materials like thorium and uranium in the mineralization poses environmental and health concerns, highlighting the urgency in their removal for producing high-purity rare earths. This study focused on experimental design to investigate the impact of various factors on the removal of thorium and uranium from solution, ultimately achieving optimal separation performance for rare earths.

Selective uptake of thorium(IV) from nitric acid medium using two extraction chromatographic resins based on diglycolamide-calix[4]arenes: Application to thorium-uranyl separation in an actual sample

Rajesh B. Gujar et al.

Summary: Two novel extraction chromatography resins (ECRs) were evaluated for the uptake of Th(IV) from nitric acid feed solutions. While both resins showed high Th(IV) uptake ability, the resin with isopentyl DGA had lower uptake, especially at lower nitric acid concentrations. Kinetic modeling suggested a pseudo-second order model, while sorption isotherm studies indicated a good fitting to the Langmuir and D-R isotherm models, implying monolayer sorption and a chemisorption model.
