Extensive 3D mapping of dislocation structures in bulk aluminum

Can Yildirim et al.

Summary: Thermomechanical processing, such as annealing, is a primary method for modifying the mechanical properties of materials. However, there is still much unknown about the reorganization of dislocation structures during annealing. In this study, we used dark field X-ray microscopy to map the dislocation structures in a large single crystal of aluminum. We observed that even after long annealing times at high temperatures, the remaining dislocations formed well-defined boundaries on specific crystallographic planes.

darfix - data analysis for dark-field X-ray microscopy

Julia Garriga Ferrer et al.

Summary: A Python package called darfix is introduced for analyzing dark-field X-ray microscopy (DFXM) and rocking curve imaging (RCI) data. It offers efficient processing and visualization tools for extracting information from acquired images. The software supports large image sets and can automatically extract relevant instrument angle settings from metadata.

Summary: In this work, a coherent Fourier ptychographic approach is described, which can be implemented on existing dark-field X-ray microscopy instruments for mapping three-dimensional lattice strain and rotation in crystalline materials. The method shows potential for characterizing crystalline materials with weak structural contrast.

X-ray free-electron laser based dark-field X-ray microscopy: a simulation-based study

Theodor Secanell Holstad et al.

Summary: Dark-field X-ray microscopy (DFXM) provides nondestructive imaging of microstructure and local strain fields in embedded crystalline elements. This study explores the feasibility of using an X-ray free-electron laser source and a pump-probe scheme to achieve picosecond time-scale DFXM. The simulated results clearly show the propagation of a strain wave.

4D microstructural evolution in a heavily deformed ferritic alloy: A new perspective in recrystallisation studies

Summary: In this study, a multiscale approach combining DFXM, SXRD and EBSD was used to investigate the recovery and recrystallization of a heavily deformed Fe-Si-Sn alloy. The results suggest that higher misorientation zones such as grain boundaries or junction points of deformation bands are preferential nucleation regions.

Summary: This study demonstrates a system for monitoring pink-beam X-rays exiting from a beamline front-end, which allows visualization of the spatial distribution of each energy component of the undulator radiation. By using single crystals and pinhole optics, good quality images were obtained with no diffraction bright spots.

Analytical methods for superresolution dislocation identification in dark-field X-ray microscopy

Michael C. Brennan et al.

Summary: This study developed several inference methods to estimate the position of dislocations from DFXM images, achieving superresolution accuracy. By incorporating models of DFXM contrast mechanism and detector measurement noise within a Bayesian inference framework, the study introduced position estimation and uncertainty quantification algorithms. The accuracy of the primary estimation algorithm was demonstrated on synthetic realistic DFXM images of edge dislocations in single-crystal aluminum, with discussions on the methods' impact on future dislocation studies.

Geometrical-optics formalism to model contrast in dark-field X-ray microscopy

H. F. Poulsen et al.

Summary: DFXM is a new full-field imaging technique that non-destructively maps the structure and local strain inside embedded crystalline elements in three dimensions. A formalism based on geometrical optics is provided for diffraction imaging, which allows simulation of DFXM images based on micro-mechanical models. The formalism supports multi-length-scale experiments and enables DFXM to be interfaced with 3D X-ray diffraction.

Dislocation-Mediated Conductivity in Oxides: Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities

Micah D. Armstrong et al.

Summary: Dislocations in ionic solids are topological extended defects that modulate composition, strain, and charge, providing potential applications in memory, switching, non-Ohmic electronics, capacitive charge storage, and single-atom catalysis. Isolating, understanding, and predicting the modified transport behavior of dislocations remain a challenge despite their capabilities. Interdisciplinary computational-experimental approaches spanning fields from microscopy to advanced manufacturing are necessary for future research advances in this area.
