Multiple sclerosis diagnostic delay and its associated factors in Upper Egyptian patients

Eman M. Khedr et al.

Summary: The earlier the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), the sooner disease-modifying treatments can be initiated. However, significant delays still occur in developing countries. Factors leading to delayed diagnosis of MS in Upper Egypt were identified in this study, including initial non-neurological consultation and previous misdiagnoses. These factors contribute to a higher relapse rate and delayed MRI acquisition, leading to a delay in diagnosis in Upper Egypt.

Automatic segmentation of white matter hyperintensities: validation and comparison with state-of-the-art methods on both Multiple Sclerosis and elderly subjects

Philippe Tran et al.

Summary: The automatic segmentation of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) is important for the diagnosis and monitoring of multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions and age-related WMH. To achieve this, a fast and robust automatic segmentation tool called WHASA-3D has been developed, which can automatically detect both types of WMH in the brain using 3D T1-weighted and T2-FLAIR images. WHASA-3D showed improved performance compared to the previous WHASA method, with higher spatial overlap, lower absolute volume error, and higher volume agreement for MS lesions. Furthermore, WHASA-3D outperformed other algorithms on the MS database, achieving the highest volume agreement and average Dice score.

Neurometabolic changes in multiple sclerosis: Fingolimod versus beta interferon or glatiramer acetate therapy

Oun Al-iedani et al.

Summary: This study compared the neurometabolic and volumetric changes in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) receiving fingolimod or injectable therapies. The results showed no differences in clinical parameters, volume, and neurometabolism between treatment groups. However, both RRMS cohorts showed changes in volume and neurometabolism compared to healthy controls.

Fatigue and brain atrophy in Egyptian patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis

Eman M. Khedr et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency of fatigue in relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients and evaluate the relationship between fatigue severity, clinical data, level of disability, and volumetric brain atrophy. The results showed that fatigue was fairly common in RRMS patients and was associated with disease severity and brain atrophy.

Brain Structural and Functional Alterations in Multiple Sclerosis-Related Fatigue: A Systematic Review

Chiara Barbi et al.

Summary: Fatigue is a disabling symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS) that significantly affects patients' quality of life. This review suggests that there may be structural and functional abnormalities in the brain, particularly in the thalamus and sensorimotor network, that are associated with fatigue symptoms in MS patients.
