Genetics and immunity of Anopheles response to the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae overlap with immunity to Plasmodium

Tullu Bukhari et al.

Summary: This study explores the genetic resistance to fungal biopesticides in mosquito populations and its potential implications for malaria control. It identifies genetic components that influence mosquito survival after exposure to the entomopathogenic fungus and reveals a similarity in the protective responses of mosquitoes against fungus and the malaria parasite. The findings suggest that selecting for fungus resistance in vector populations may also enhance resistance to malaria.

The Expression of Chemosensory Genes in Male Maxillary Palps of Anopheles coluzzii (Diptera: Culicidae) and An. quadriannulatus

Giridhar Athrey et al.

Summary: The study compared the chemosensory gene expression in the male maxillary palps of An. coluzzii and its sibling species An. quadriannulatus, revealing species and female-biased chemosensory gene expression patterns. The results suggest that the male maxillary palps could play a sex- and species-specific role in the perception of chemical stimuli, guiding future studies on the role of this organ in these species.

20-Hydroxyecdysone (20E) signaling as a promising target for the chemical control of malaria vectors

Elodie Ekoka et al.

Summary: With the rapid development and spread of resistance to insecticides among anopheline malaria vectors, the efficacy of current World Health Organization (WHO)-approved insecticides targeting these vectors is under threat. Novel interventions, including improved and enhanced insecticide formulations with new targets or synergists, as well as added sterilants and/or antimalarials, have been developed to address this issue. Studies have shown that insecticides targeting the 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) signaling pathway may be effective for controlling malaria vectors, with promising results in applying compounds like methoxyfenozide and halofenozide to different phases of Anopheles populations.

Pyrethroid Resistance Aggravation in Ugandan Malaria Vectors Is Reducing Bednet Efficacy

Magellan Tchouakui et al.

Summary: The study revealed high intensity of pyrethroid resistance in major malaria vectors in Uganda, leading to reduced effectiveness of insecticide-treated nets. The over-expression of cytochrome P450 genes may not be the only resistance mechanism involved in this case. Urgent action should be taken to prevent the spread of super-resistance in malaria vectors.
