Evolutionary and Genetic Recombination Analyses of Coxsackievirus A6 Variants Associated with Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Outbreaks in Thailand between 2019 and 2022

Jiratchaya Puenpa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular epidemiological trends, evolutionary dynamics, and recombination characteristics of CV-A6-associated HFMD in Thailand between 2019 and 2022. The results revealed that CV-A6 was the predominant genotype and identified four recombinant forms. These findings are important for the development of vaccines to prevent the spread of CV-A6 infection.

Diversity of Human Enterovirus Co-Circulations in Five Kindergartens in Bangkok between July 2019 and January 2020

Pichamon Sittikul et al.

Summary: Human enterovirus causes various clinical manifestations and enterovirus A71 and coxsackievirus are significant causes of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), especially in children aged from birth to five years old. Molecular tools are used to investigate human enteroviruses circulating among kindergarten students and identify genotype variants causing HFMD epidemics. In this study, EV-A71 and coxsackievirus clusters were identified among symptomatic and asymptomatic cases in kindergartens in Bangkok, Thailand, and viral transmission was discovered between closely related clones.

Enterovirus 71-Associated Infection in South Vietnam: Vaccination Is a Real Solution

Natalia I. Romanenkova et al.

Summary: In South Vietnam, a high proportion of enterovirus 71 (EVA71) was found in cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD), enteroviral meningitis, and acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). The majority of EVA71 belonged to genotype C4, while a smaller percentage belonged to genotype B5. This highlights the importance of surveillance, outbreak prediction, and vaccination to combat EVA71-associated infections.

Current status of hand-foot-and-mouth disease

Peiyu Zhu et al.

Summary: Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral illness commonly seen in young children under 5 years of age, characterized by oral herpes and rashes on the hands and feet. It is important to note that HFMD may be associated with fatal neurological complications, but currently, there is no specific pharmaceutical intervention for HFMD.

A novel subgenotype C6 Enterovirus A71 originating from the recombination between subgenotypes C4 and C2 strains in mainland China

Yongjuan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic characteristics of a new variant DL71 of Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71). DL71 showed significant differences in genetic distance and was found to have undergone nine recombination events involving smaller fragments. DL71 was identified as a novel multiple inter-subgenotype recombinant derived from dominant subgenotype C4 and sporadic subgenotype C2 strains.

Epidemiology of hand, foot, and mouth disease and the genetic characteristics of Coxsackievirus A16 in Taiyuan, Shanxi, China from 2010 to 2021

Jiane Guo et al.

Summary: This study describes the epidemiological features of HFMD and the genetic characteristics of CVA16 in Taiyuan, China from 2010 to 2021. HFMD epidemics in Taiyuan occur from April to September each year, with the highest incidence in children aged 1-5 years. CVA16 remains prevalent in Taiyuan and belongs to two different clades of the B1 genotype.

Dayna Cheng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the epidemiology and genetic variations of CVA16 in Taiwan from 1998 to 2021, finding that CVA16 infections were more prevalent in patients aged 1 to 3 years, with subgenotype B1 being dominant and a potential candidate for a CVA16 vaccine.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in Thailand: A Comprehensive Modelling of Epidemic Dynamics

Suraj Verma et al.

Summary: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a significant public health issue in Thailand, but there is currently no nationwide and comprehensive model for its epidemic dynamics. This study utilized the SEIRS model to explore reinfection cases and found uneven spread of the disease across provinces. It is recommended that under similar cultural and environmental conditions, the disease will persist in the coming years based on the high basic reproduction number (R-0).

Summary: Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is a major causative agent of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and herpangina, with potential neurological complications and death. Vaccination is the most efficient way to control virus infection, with multiple types of vaccines currently in development and use.

Genetic diversity and evolution of enterovirus A71 subgenogroup C1 from children with hand, foot, and mouth disease in Thailand

Jiratchaya Puenpa et al.

Summary: Eleven full-length genome sequences of 2019 EV-A71 C1 strains isolated from HFMD patients in Thailand from 2019 to early 2020 were described, showing the emergence of multiple lineages through recombination. Bayesian-based phylogenetic analysis indicated that the 2019 EV-A71 C1 Thai strains share a common ancestor with variants in Europe. The substitution rate for the 2019 EV-A71 C1 genome was estimated to be similar to that observed in previous outbreaks. These findings are crucial for understanding the evolution of EV-A C1 during the ongoing HFMD outbreak and its relevance to disease outcomes in children worldwide.
