Modeling the damage evolution and recompression behavior during laser shock loading of aluminum microstructures at the mesoscales

Sergey Galitskiy et al.

Summary: Damage evolution in metals during laser-shock loading is a complex phenomenon that is currently limited by modeling efforts at the atomic scales, unable to fully capture the response of experimental systems and their post-spall behavior.

Understanding the phase transformation mechanisms that affect the dynamic response of Fe-based microstructures at the atomic scales

Summary: Large-scale MD simulations investigate the shock-induced evolution of microstructure in Fe-based systems, showing the formation of ε phase variants and α phase twins in [110]-oriented Fe due to shock compression, which serve as void nucleation sites during spall failure. The study also reveals that shock wave interactions with Cu/Fe interfaces influence the distribution of twins and void nucleation stresses in the Fe phase of Cu/Fe microstructures.

Role of pre-existing dislocations on the shock compression and spall behavior in single-crystal copper at atomic scales

Ke Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that pre-existing dislocation loops in single-crystal Cu systems result in decreased shock wave velocity and a substantial decay of the Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) values, but also increase spall strength. The decay behavior of HEL values and the power-law dependence of the number of voids on shock propagation distance and initial dislocation density were observed.
