Drone flight data reveal energy and greenhouse gas emissions savings for very small package delivery

Thiago A. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) for last-mile deliveries have an impact on energy productivity and greenhouse gas emissions. A usable energy model and machine-learning algorithm have been developed to assess energy consumption and emissions of drones. Compared to other vehicles, drones have lower energy consumption.

Energy consumption models for delivery drones: A comparison and assessment

Juan Zhang et al.

Summary: Energy consumption is a critical constraint for drone delivery operations to achieve their full potential. This paper provides a uniform framework to facilitate understanding different drone energy consumption models and emphasizes the importance of careful model selection. More research, especially empirical research, is needed to ensure the accuracy of selected models in reflecting delivery drone designs and uses.

Empirical analysis of the role of incentives in zero-emission last-mile deliveries in California

Miguel Jaller et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the role of incentives for zero and near-zero emission vehicle (ZEV) technologies in last-mile delivery operations. The study compares the total cost of ownership, life cycle environmental impacts, and marginal health damages associated with last-mile deliveries across different vehicle powertrain and fuel pathways, under existing incentives in California. Results suggest that battery electric freight vehicles are cost competitive with conventional diesel vehicles, particularly for smaller light commercial vehicles in last mile applications.

The environmental impact of fast shipping ecommerce in inbound logistics operations: A case study in Mexico

Andres Munoz-Villamizar et al.

Summary: Consumer demand for fast shipping has led to companies competing for shorter delivery times. However, this trend not only increases transportation costs but also carbon emissions. Simulation models show that fast shipping significantly raises CO2 emissions and costs, posing challenges for sustainability in inbound logistics.

Minimizing energy and cost in range-limited drone deliveries with speed optimization

Okan Dukkanci et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the Energy Minimizing and Range Constrained Drone Delivery Problem (ERDDP), which addresses the optimization of selecting launch points, assigning customers, and determining drone speed. Through the use of nonlinear models and second order cone programming, the paper presents computational results on a realistic data set to quantify the impact of various parameters.

Modeling CO2 Emissions from Trips using Urban Air Mobility and Emerging Automobile Technologies

Sai V. Mudumba et al.

Summary: The study examines the potential of urban air mobility (UAM) operations to provide more attractive trips in metropolitan areas compared to surface-based transportation, while also acknowledging the emissions challenges. By developing an emissions model for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the study compares trip emissions using UAM and automobile-based trips, with case studies in Chicago and Dallas to showcase regional differences. The research highlights the significant impact of the grid emission index of a region's power plant on the emissions of electric vehicles.

Urban Air Mobility: History, Ecosystem, Market Potential, and Challenges

Adam P. Cohen et al.

Summary: Since the early 20(th) century, inventors have been conceptualizing flying cars and other urban aerial transportation. This research provides insights into the history, current developments, and potential barriers to growth and mainstreaming of Urban Air Mobility (UAM), which envisions a safe, sustainable, affordable, and accessible air transportation system for passenger mobility, goods delivery, and emergency services within metropolitan areas.

A Traffic Demand Analysis Method for Urban Air Mobility

Vishwanath Bulusu et al.

Summary: This study estimates the maximum number of people who can benefit from Urban Air Mobility in the context of approximately three hundred thousand cross-bay commute trips in the San Francisco Bay Area. The results indicate that about forty-five percent of demand would benefit from UAM when the roads are highly congested, and approximately three percent of demand can benefit from UAM even when the roads are mostly free.
