Axial Loading during MRI Induces Lumbar Foraminal Area Changes and Has the Potential to Improve Diagnostics of Nerve Root Compromise

Hanna Hebelka et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of spine loading on lumbar foramina in patients with low-back pain. MRI scans were performed in a relaxed supine position and during axial loading. The results showed that overall, spine loading led to a reduction in the area of intervertebral foramina, but there were large individual variations. The qualitative assessment of foraminal stenosis did not always align with the measured area changes.
