Dynamic temperature-strain discrimination using a hybrid distributed fiber sensor based on Brillouin and Rayleigh scattering

Matthew J. Murray et al.

Summary: We propose a distributed fiber sensor that can differentiate between temperature and strain, while achieving low-noise and dynamic measurements. By combining slope-assisted Brillouin optical time domain analysis with Rayleigh-scattering-based frequency scanning optical time domain reflectometry, our hybrid sensor exhibits high sensitivity and is capable of both dynamic and quasi-static measurements. This system enables temperature/strain discrimination with a quasi-static temperature resolution of 16 m degrees C and a strain resolution of 140 ne along 500 m of single mode fiber, with a spatial resolution of 5 m.

Large evanescently-induced Brillouin scattering at the surrounding of a nanofibre

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: The authors observed efficient Brillouin scattering generated by an evanescent field nearby a single pass sub-wavelength waveguide, which creates a significant connection between Brillouin scattering in waveguides, Brillouin spectroscopy and microscopy. The experiment achieved a higher Brillouin gain compared to previous works, highlighting the importance for further advancements in photonics functionalities.

Ultra-long Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer based on distortion compensating pulse and hybrid lumped-distributed amplification

Xizi Sun et al.

Summary: A Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) scheme based on hybrid amplification, consisting of a distributed Raman amplification and a lumped amplification provided by remotely pumped Erbium-doped fibers, is proposed. The scheme enables the longest sensing distance among existing repeaterless techniques. The optimization of optical powers, analysis of pulse distortion, and the use of compensating pulse approach are studied to achieve high-performance long-distance BOTDA sensors.

All-Fiber Magneto-Optical Effect Using Nanoparticles Doped Sol-Gel Thin Film Deposited Within Microstructured Fibers

Alexis Dufour et al.

Summary: An innovative functionalization method is described for enhancing the Faraday effect of microstructured silica-based optical fibers. By varying the process parameters, the film thickness and nanoparticle concentrations can be tailored to optimize the fiber's magneto-optical response, leading to significant polar magneto-optical effects. This method shows promise for designing fiber-based sensors of magnetic fields.
