Assessing seroprevalence and associated risk factors for multiple infectious diseases in Sabah, Malaysia using serological multiplex bead assays

YuYen L. L. Chan et al.

Summary: This study in Northern Sabah utilized multiplex bead assays to assess serological responses to six infectious diseases simultaneously. Results showed varying seroprevalence rates for different diseases, with age being a consistent significant risk factor. Spatial heterogeneity was observed prominently in lymphatic filariasis and toxoplasmosis, highlighting the importance of demographic and spatial data in infectious disease surveillance.

Plasma Hsp90 levels in patients with systemic sclerosis and relation to lung and skin involvement: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study

Hana Storkanova et al.

Summary: According to the study, plasma levels of Hsp90 are increased in patients with systemic sclerosis compared to healthy controls, and are associated with increased inflammatory activity, worsened lung function, and extent of skin involvement in patients with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis. In patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease treated with cyclophosphamide, baseline Hsp90 levels can predict changes in DLCO over 12 months of therapy.

Impact of a Rapid Decline in Malaria Transmission on Antimalarial IgG Subclasses and Avidity

Isaac Ssewanyana et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the decay rate of total IgG following infection decreased with age during declining malaria transmission, and the increase in avidity index post-infection was largely due to the rapid loss of non-avid total IgG. Further research is needed to understand the functional differences between IgG1 and IgG3 to determine their role in protective immunity to malaria.

Guiding placement of health facilities using multiple malaria criteria and an interactive tool

Kok Ben Toh et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of spatial allocation of new health facilities on malaria prevalence in a district in northern Ghana. Using location-allocation analysis, it was found that two locations could benefit from new health facilities in terms of optimizing malaria prevalence and travel time criteria.

Environmental and spatial risk factors for the larval habitats of Plasmodium knowlesi vectors in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo

Isabel Byrne et al.

Summary: The study found that land-use changes and topography influence the suitability of larval habitats for malaria vectors, potentially explaining the link between P. knowlesi incidence and deforestation. Predictive maps and identification of influential spatial scales may help target vector control interventions effectively.

Determining seropositivity-A review of approaches to define population seroprevalence when using multiplex bead assays to assess burden of tropical diseases

YuYen Chan et al.

Summary: This review highlights the challenges in determining appropriate cut-off values for seropositivity generated by multiplex bead assays. Factors to consider when determining optimal cut-off approaches include methods recommended by previous research, transmission dynamics, and the immunological backgrounds of the population. The lack of international standards for estimating seropositivity emphasizes the need for consistent methods aligning with disease epidemiology data to improve comparability between settings and enable assessment of changes over time.

IgG Antibody Responses Are Preferential Compared With IgM for Use as Serological Markers for Detecting Recent Exposure to Plasmodium vivax Infection

Rhea J. Longley et al.

Summary: A novel panel of P. vivax proteins has been identified as serological markers for detecting recent exposure to P. vivax, but IgM responses showed poorer classification performance compared to IgG responses.

Addressing hard-to-reach populations for achieving malaria elimination in the Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network countries

Kinley Wangdi et al.

Summary: Members of the Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network are working towards eliminating malaria by 2030. Although progress has been made in shrinking the malaria map in the region, challenges remain in reaching hard-to-access populations such as those in border and forest areas. Strategies to improve intervention coverage for these populations include expanding preventive measures and enhancing malaria surveillance through tools like spatial decision support systems. Policy changes and adaptations may be necessary to effectively implement these strategies across different population groups.
