Surgical treatment for recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma: Current status and challenges

Di Wang et al.

Summary: Primary liver cancer, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, is a major global health concern. Despite advancements in surgical technology and perioperative management, high tumor recurrence rates remain a challenge for long-term survival in HCC patients. Surgical removal, either through salvage liver transplantation or repeat hepatic resection, is the most effective potentially curative therapy for resectable recurrent HCC. The choice between these options depends on factors such as patient selection and availability of liver grafts.

Targeting pancreatic cancer by TAK-981: a SUMOylation inhibitor that activates the immune system and blocks cancer cell cycle progression in a preclinical model

Sumit Kumar et al.

Summary: The pharmacological inhibition of the SUMO pathway represents a potential strategy for targeting PDAC by inhibiting cancer cell cycle progression and activating anti-tumor immunity through interferon signaling. TAK-981, a novel small molecule inhibitor, has shown potential in reducing SUMOylation and inhibiting the proliferation of PDAC cells.

Bioinformatics-based analysis of SUMOylation-related genes in hepatocellular carcinoma reveals a role of upregulated SAE1 in promoting cell proliferation

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the expression profile and prognostic relevance of SUMO-related genes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using publicly available data. The findings suggest that SUMO-2 and SAE1 may regulate cell proliferation in HCC by modulating the cell cycle. Additionally, IGF2BP3 was found to contribute to the upregulation of SAE1 in an N6-methyladenosine (m6A)-dependent way. Furthermore, an SAE1-related risk score (SRRS) was developed and validated as an independent prognostic factor in HCC and could predict the effectiveness of transarterial chemoembolization.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Silencing CDCA8 Suppresses Hepatocellular Carcinoma Growth and Stemness via Restoration of ATF3 Tumor Suppressor and Inactivation of AKT/β-Catenin Signaling

Taewon Jeon et al.

Summary: The overexpression of CDCA8 in HCC tissues leads to poorer survival outcomes, but its specific functions in HCC development have been unclear. In this study, silencing CDCA8 was shown to inhibit HCC cell growth and stemness by restoring ATF3 tumor suppressor and inactivating oncogenic AKT/beta-catenin signaling, providing a potential molecular strategy for HCC treatment and prevention of metastasis or recurrence.
