BDNF Augmentation Using Riluzole Reverses Doxorubicin-Induced Decline in Cognitive Function and Neurogenesis

Manal T. T. Usmani et al.

Summary: Breast cancer patients treated with doxorubicin (ADR) experience reduced levels of BDNF, leading to cognitive impairments. The orally active BDNF-enhancing medication riluzole (RZ) improves hippocampal-dependent learning and memory function, reduces anxiety-like behavior, and protects against neuroinflammation. RZ also prevents chemotherapy-induced reductions in BDNF levels and promotes dentate neurogenesis.

Loss to follow-up of minorities, adolescents, and young adults on clinical trials: A report from the Children's Oncology Group

Vidya Puthenpura et al.

Summary: This study identified higher rates of loss to follow-up among young patients, racial and ethnic minorities, and residents of low socioeconomic status areas participating in pediatric cancer clinical trials. Targeted interventions are needed to ensure equitable follow-up and improved assessment of long-term outcomes.

Cognitive impairment in adolescent and young adult cancer patients: Pre-treatment findings of a longitudinal study

Alexandre Chan et al.

Summary: This multicenter cohort study evaluated the cognitive function and ability of adolescent and young adult cancer patients (AYAC) before treatment. The results showed that AYAC performed poorly on objective cognitive tests, had a lower self-perception of cognitive impairment but a greater impact of cognitive changes on their quality of life compared to healthy controls. Elevated inflammatory markers and lower baseline BDNF were observed in AYAC, which were associated with cognitive function.

Evidence of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in ameliorating cancer-related cognitive impairment: A systematic review of human studies

Summary: This systematic review assessed the relationship between BDNF biomarkers and neurocognitive outcomes in cancer patients and survivors. The results suggest that BDNF is a potential monitoring biomarker and druggable target for CRCI.

Summary: The study found that cognitive functioning in multiple myeloma patients was worse before chemotherapy compared to during treatment, and it was possible to predict patients' cognitive state based on the neurotrophin BDNF level.
