Youth Sport Participation Trends Across Europe: Implications for Policy and Practice

Summary: Despite the known benefits of sport participation for children and adolescents, this study found that sports participation rates decline during adolescence in Europe. Male participation rates were significantly higher than female rates across all age categories and most sports. There was a decrease in participation rates for males during adolescence, while females showed a decrease in participation rates during early adolescence but an increase during late adolescence for many sports. These findings can inform efforts to promote youth sport participation.
