Gigahertz optoacoustic vibration in Sub-5 nm tip-supported nano-optomechanical metasurface

Renxian Gao et al.

Summary: Nano-optomechanical systems with gigahertz acoustic vibration are essential for all-optical manipulation, quantum control, on-chip data processing, and optomechanical sensing. In this study, a high-quality 5 GHz optoacoustic vibration and ultrafast optomechanical all-optical manipulation were demonstrated in a sub-5 nm tip-supported nano-optomechanical metasurface (TSNOMS). The design of a semi-suspended metasurface enhances the optical energy input and reduces mechanical and thermal losses, resulting in improved conversion efficiency and oscillation quality.

Plasmonic Strain Sensors Based on Au-TiO2 Thin Films on Flexible Substrates

Marco S. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This study introduces a thin film with reversible optical response that exhibits localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon under repeated uniaxial strain. Gold nanoparticles were grown throughout a titanium dioxide dielectric matrix to prepare the sensing platform. The flexible nanoplasmonic transducers showed a higher sensitivity and transmittance gauge factor at maximum strain, indicating a reduction in the refractive index of the matrix surrounding the gold nanoparticles. Optical modeling using discrete dipole approximation suggests a correlation between the optical response of the strained thin film sensor and the reduction in refractive index.

Force Sensing in an Optomechanical System with Feedback-Controlled In-Loop Light

F. Bemani et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a new type of near-resonant narrow-band force sensor with extremely low optically added noise using a feedback-controlled optical loop. In the optimal low-noise regime, the system is analogous to an optomechanical system containing a near quantum-limited optical parametric amplifier coupled to an engineered reservoir interacting with the cavity.

Summary: Confining electromagnetic waves and mechanical displacement fields to nanometer dimensions through plasmonic nanostructures presents opportunities for enhanced interaction strength, increased bandwidth, and efficient actuation of mechanical systems at the nanoscale. Coupling mechanical oscillators to plasmonic nanostructures introduces mechanical degrees of freedom and leads to large resonance shifts for minor position changes. The emerging field of plasmomechanics explores the fundamental principles underlying the coupling between light and plasmomechanical nanoresonators.
