Why is motilin active in some studies with mice, rats, and guinea pigs, but not in others? Implications for functional variability among rodents

Gareth J. Sanger

Summary: The gastrointestinal hormone motilin helps control stomach movements during hunger and promotes hunger in humans. While motilin and its receptor genes have undergone pseudonymization in rodents, some studies suggest low concentrations of motilin can still function in the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system of these animals.

Quinine Effects on Gut and Pancreatic Hormones and Antropyloroduodenal Pressures in Humans-Role of Delivery Site and Sex

Peyman Rezaie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of intraduodenal administration of quinine hydrochloride (QHCl) compared to intragastric administration on gut and pancreatic hormones and pyloric pressures in healthy men and women. The results showed that intraduodenal administration of QHCl had greater effects on the release of gut and pancreatic hormones and pyloric pressures compared to intragastric administration. The study also found that insulin stimulation and glucose lowering were more pronounced in females, while other hormones and pressures were not affected by sex.

Human intestinal bitter taste receptors regulate innate immune responses and metabolic regulators in obesity

Kathrin Liszt et al.

Summary: Taste 2 receptors (TAS2Rs) in the human gut play a key role in detecting potentially toxic food. The study found that human jejunal crypts, especially in individuals with obesity, respond to bitter substances by releasing antimicrobial peptides and regulating other immune factors that affect the growth of E. coli. The study also identified the role of TAS2R43 in the effects of aloin on E. coli growth and mucus glycoprotein release. Additionally, the study revealed the potential of TAS2Rs as a target for treating diseases related to the immune system and body weight control.

Comparative Effects of Intragastric and Intraduodenal Administration of Quinine on the Plasma Glucose Response to a Mixed-Nutrient Drink in Healthy Men: Relations with Glucoregulatory Hormones and Gastric Emptying

Braden D. Rose et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of intragastric and intraduodenal quinine administration on the plasma glucose response in healthy men. The results showed that both routes of administration similarly lowered plasma glucose, increased plasma insulin and GLP-1, and slowed gastric emptying.

The endocrine effects of bitter tastant administration in the gastrointestinal system: intragastric versus intraduodenal administration

Wout Verbeure et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of bitter tastants on hunger ratings and hormone plasma levels, finding that infusing bitter tastants into the stomach was more effective in reducing hunger sensations. Quinine hydrochloride showed the best performance when infused 60 minutes before food intake.
