Bioactive Peptides from Edible Mushrooms-The Preparation, Mechanisms, Structure-Activity Relationships and Prospects

Haiyan Li et al.

Summary: Mushroom bioactive peptides (MBPs) extracted from edible mushrooms have diverse health benefits including antioxidant, anti-aging, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, memory/cognitive improvement, antitumour, anti-diabetes, and cholesterol reduction effects. The bioactivities of MBPs are associated with their molecular weights, charge, amino acid compositions, and sequences. Compared to animal-derived peptides, MBPs are ideal raw materials for healthy and functional products due to their abundance, safety, affordability, and easy large-scale production of valuable nutrients. This review provides a comprehensive perspective on the preparation, bioactivities, mechanisms, and structure-activity relationships of MBPs, as well as the challenges and prospects of their application in functional products.

Changes in tumor suppressors and inflammatory responses during hydrogen peroxide-induced senescence in rat fibroblasts

Rui-Fang Liu et al.

Summary: This study establishes a cellular model of rapid proliferation and senescence of rat tail-tip fibroblasts using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and investigates the changes in oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and cell cycle of fibroblasts. The results show that H2O2 can promote fibroblast proliferation and senescence by influencing cellular antioxidant systems, inflammatory responses, and cell cycle. Furthermore, the concentration and treatment time of H2O2 significantly affect the effects on cells.

Transcriptome analysis revealing the mechanism of soybean protein isolates and soybean peptides on Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus Lra05

Yinxiao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the overall changes in gene expression of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus Lra05 treated with soybean protein and peptides. The results showed that soybean protein promoted genes related to fatty acid biosynthesis, while soybean peptides played the opposite role. Furthermore, soybean peptides stimulated genes involved in purine and protein synthesis, while soybean protein specifically inhibited genes related to pyrimidine metabolism.

A Comprehensive Comparison of Different Selenium Supplements: Mitigation of Heat Stress and Exercise Fatigue-Induced Liver Injury

Xinwei Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the protective effects of different selenium supplements against heat stress and exercise fatigue-induced liver injury. The results showed that selenium-enriched soybean peptides (SePPs) displayed higher antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, and could improve antioxidant levels, inhibit lipid peroxidation, reduce liver enzyme levels, promote liver cell repair, and reduce inflammation.

Cellular senescence in ageing: from mechanisms to therapeutic opportunities

Raffaella Di Micco et al.

Summary: Cellular senescence is characterized by permanent proliferation arrest and can occur in response to various stresses like telomere dysfunction. Apart from stress-induced senescence, it can also be part of controlled programs in biological processes like embryonic development. Senescent cells contribute to impaired tissue regeneration, chronic diseases, and organismal aging, but also present an opportunity for intervention in aging and associated diseases.

Ethyl Acetate Fraction of Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medic Flowers Exerts Inhibitory Effects Against Oxidative Stress in H2O2-Induced HepG2 Cells and D-Galactose-Induced Aging Mice

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that EA has significant protective effects against oxidative injuries, reducing cell apoptosis caused by oxidative stress and protecting the body from oxidative damage by modulating relevant signal pathways and gene expression. Animal experiments also confirmed the effectiveness of EA in combating oxidative damage, suggesting its potential as an antioxidant agent for preventing aging-related diseases.

Bioactive anti-aging agents and the identification of new anti-oxidant soybean peptides

William Kwame Amakye et al.

Summary: The study compared the anti-aging effects of soybean, oyster, and sea cucumber protein hydrolysates, finding that soybean hydrolysate had the strongest impact on reversing aging-related learning and memory impairments and oxidative stress induced by D-galactose. Efforts to isolate and characterize the responsible anti-aging peptides led to the identification of two peptides, WPK and AYLH, from soybean hydrolysate that showed strong antioxidant activity in vitro. These findings suggest that soybean hydrolysate and its constituent peptides could be effective antioxidant agents for aging-related cognitive impairments and oxidative stress.
