Magnesium intake is inversely associated with risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease among American adults

Liping Lu et al.

Summary: This study suggests that higher magnesium intake is associated with lower odds of NAFLD in midlife, and consumption of whole grains, a major dietary source of magnesium, is inversely associated with the odds of NAFLD. Further research is needed to establish a possible causal relationship.

Restoring cellular magnesium balance through Cyclin M4 protects against acetaminophen-induced liver damage

Irene Gonzalez-Recio et al.

Summary: This study reveals that serum Mg2+ levels decrease in patients with drug induced liver injury (DILI) and animal models of acetaminophen overdose. The authors suggest that targeting the Mg2+ transporter Cyclin M4 could be a potential therapeutic strategy for acetaminophen overdose induced liver injury. The findings demonstrate the importance of magnesium in liver function and identify Cyclin M4 as a key player in the disturbance of magnesium homeostasis in the liver under acetaminophen overdose.

Association of Magnesium Intake with Liver Fibrosis among Adults in the United States

Meng-Hua Tao et al.

Summary: The study suggests that higher total magnesium intake may reduce the risk of significant fibrosis, especially among those with lower daily calcium intake. There were no clear associations between calcium intake and significant fibrosis. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Magnesium in Aging, Health and Diseases

Mario Barbagallo et al.

Summary: Several changes in magnesium metabolism occur with aging, including reduced magnesium intake, impaired absorption, and increased renal excretion. Mild magnesium deficiency in the elderly may present with symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairments, often mistaken for age-related issues. Chronic magnesium deficits can lead to increased free radical production, contributing to the development of various age-related disorders, while magnesium deficiency has been linked to numerous human diseases. Dietary adjustments and magnesium supplementation could help in preventing chronic conditions associated with aging.

Carvacrol alleviates liver fibrosis by inhibiting TRPM7 and modulating the MAPK signaling pathway

Shiyi Cai et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that carvacrol could effectively reduce liver damage and the progression of liver fibrosis in mice by inhibiting the activation and proliferation of hepatic stellate cells. Additionally, it was found that carvacrol inhibits the expression of TRPM7 and mediates through the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathway to inhibit the proliferation and activation of HSC-T6 cells.

Micronutrient Deficiencies in Patients with Decompensated Liver Cirrhosis

Gemma Llibre-Nieto et al.

Summary: Patients with decompensated cirrhosis commonly have micronutrient deficiencies, with vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin B6 and zinc being the most prevalent. The severity of hepatic insufficiency correlates with varying levels of micronutrient deficiencies, such as lower zinc, vitamin E and vitamin A, and higher vitamin B12 and ferritin levels.

Low serum magnesium concentration is associated with the presence of viable hepatocellular carcinoma tissue in cirrhotic patients

Simona Parisse et al.

Summary: The study found that serum magnesium levels were significantly lower in HCC patients compared to non-HCC patients. Low serum magnesium was associated with the presence of HCC, and magnesium levels at HCC diagnosis were lower than before diagnosis and after treatment. This suggests that HCC may have a high demand for magnesium, disrupting the body's magnesium balance.
