One stage hydrothermal treatment: A green strategy for simultaneous extraction of food hydrocolloid and co-products from sweet lime (Citrus Limetta) peels

Ipsita Das et al.

Summary: The potential of a one-stage hydrothermal process in using water as an extraction medium for the simultaneous extraction of pectin and phenols from Citrus limetta peels was investigated. The optimal conditions for the highest extraction yield of pectin and phenol were determined. The obtained pectin exhibited comparable physicochemical and thermal properties to commercial pectin. The phenolic extract showed higher antioxidant activity and contained various identified flavonoids. These results suggest the suitability of the hydrothermal process as a green extraction method for co-extracting pectin and phenols from Citrus limetta peels.

Effects of food matrix elements (dietary fibres) on grapefruit peel flavanone profile and on faecal microbiota during in vitro fermentation

Rongxue Tang et al.

Summary: The study found that pectin, konjac, and chitosan can increase the content of low-molecular-weight metabolites in grapefruit peel, and that high-viscosity food matrices (such as konjac and chitosan) have a significant impact on gut microbiota during simulated colonic fermentation. Dietary fibers can retain flavanones in grapefruit peel.

Antitumor bioactivity and gut microbiota modulation of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in a rat animal model for colorectal cancer

Javier Fernandez et al.

Summary: Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a non-toxic polymer, has been tested in an animal model for colorectal cancer. In this study, PHB was able to reduce the number of polyps and the tumoral extension area. It also induced an increase in beneficial gut bacteria and a reduction in pro-inflammatory bacteria. This antitumor effect is caused by the gut production of 3-hydroxybutyrate and butyrate.

Evaluation of Microbial-Fructo-Oligosaccharides Metabolism by Human Gut Microbiota Fermentation as Compared to Commercial Inulin-Derived Oligosaccharides

Dalila Roupar et al.

Summary: The prebiotic potential of fructo-oligosaccharides produced by a newly isolated Aspergillus ibericus and purified by Saccharomyces cerevisiae YIL162 W was evaluated. The microbial-FOS significantly stimulated the growth of Bifidobacterium probiotic strains and had a positive effect on gut microbiota composition. Differences in the structure of FOS samples may explain their different functionalities.

Esperanza M. Garcia-Castello et al.

Summary: The study focused on recovering inulin and polyphenols from artichoke wastes using water or water-ethanol mixtures as extracting agents. Water extraction at 89 degrees C and 139 min yielded 80% inulin content, 60% total phenolic content, and 56% antioxidant activity. Water-ethanol extraction at 22.4% EtOH, 81 degrees C, and 217 min led to extraction yields of 90% total phenolic content, 38% antioxidant activity, and 58% inulin content.

Anti-inflammatory and intestinal microbiota modulation properties of high hydrostatic pressure treated cyanidin-3-glucoside and blueberry pectin complexes on dextran sodium sulfate-induced ulcerative colitis mice

Chang Tan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of cyanidin-3-glucoside and blueberry pectin complexes on mice with colitis. The results showed that the complexes, after high hydrostatic pressure treatment, significantly alleviated diarrhea and colon shortening, and improved gut microbiota composition. The potential mechanism of action involved reduction in intestinal oxidative stress and inflammatory factors expression, improvement in anti-inflammatory factor levels, and inhibition of the NF-kappa B signaling pathway.

Caian He et al.

Summary: A new approach using CSS as green extracting agents for extracting pectin from clementine peel was proposed. The extracted CMP showed higher yield, uronic acid content, and a wide DE value compared to traditional methods, mainly influenced by CSS pH and extraction temperature. Especially, low-methyl-esterified CMP solutions exhibited excellent gel-forming capacity sensitive to low pH and Ca2+.
