Stress ulcer prophylaxis in critically ill adult patients with sepsis at risk of gastrointestinal bleeding: a retrospective cohort study

Minqiang Huang et al.

Summary: Stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) does not have an effect on mortality, rate of gastrointestinal bleeding, pneumonia, Clostridium difficile infection, or ICU length of stay in critically ill adult patients with sepsis who have risk factors for GI bleeding.

Personalized nutrition therapy in critical care: 10 expert recommendations

Paul E. Wischmeyer et al.

Summary: Personalization of ICU nutrition is important for the future of critical care. Guidelines recommend low-dose enteral or parenteral nutrition within 48 hours of admission, with consideration for alternative routes when necessary. Indirect calorimetry should be used to measure energy expenditure, and protein delivery should be adjusted based on patient stability. Micronutrient evaluation and muscle monitoring are also important considerations in post-ICU nutrition. Further research is needed on specialized anabolic nutrients and rehabilitation interventions for post-ICU recovery.

Significance of the Modified NUTRIC Score for Predicting Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Severe Community-Acquired Pneumonia

Chia-Cheng Tseng et al.

Summary: This study compared the prognostic accuracy of the modified Nutrition Risk in Critically Ill (mNUTRIC) score with other clinical prediction rules for severe community-acquired pneumonia (SCAP) patients. The results showed that the mNUTRIC score was a better predictor of clinical outcomes compared to other prediction rules.

Dynamic monitoring of kidney injury status over 3 days in the intensive care unit as a sepsis phenotype associated with hospital mortality and hyperinflammation

Chiung-Yu Lin et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively enrolled 523 sepsis patients to investigate the predictive value of dynamically monitoring AKI in the ICU for hospital mortality. The results indicated that worsening AKI in the first 3 days of ICU admission may be a sepsis phenotype predictive of higher hospital mortality, potentially due to abnormal inflammatory response.

Epidemiology, Management, and Outcomes of Sepsis in ICUs among Countries of Differing National Wealth across Asia

Andrew Li et al.

Summary: This study found that sepsis is a common reason for admission to ICUs in Asia, with a higher mortality rate in low-income and lower middle-income countries/regions compared to high-income countries/regions. Compliance with sepsis bundles remains low, and delaying antibiotic administration beyond 3 hours is associated with increased mortality.

The current use of ultrasound to measure skeletal muscle and its ability to predict clinical outcomes: a systematic review

Patrick Casey et al.

Summary: Ultrasound is a promising tool for measuring skeletal muscle mass and quality, and can predict functional capacity, clinical outcomes, and survival. However, further standardization is needed before ultrasound can be widely used in nutritionally vulnerable patients.

Phase Angle and Frailty are Important Prognostic Factors in Critically ILL Medical Patients: A Prospective Cohort Study

S. J. Ko et al.

Summary: The study revealed that high PhA above 3.5 was associated with lower in-hospital mortality and a shorter duration of ICU stay, while frailty was associated with more mechanical ventilation days.

Is phase angle a valuable prognostic tool in cancer patients' survival? A systematic review and meta-analysis of available literature

Arman Arab et al.

Summary: The study revealed a positive correlation between phase angle (PA) and cancer survival, with PA playing a significant prognostic role in predicting patient survival. Patients with lower PA values were found to have a lower likelihood of survival compared to those with higher PA values.

Weight loss, phase angle, and survival in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy: a prospective study with 10-year follow-up

Elemarcia M. S. Paixao et al.

Summary: This study found that weight loss during radiotherapy, age, and treatment site are associated with higher risk of death in cancer patients after a 10-year follow-up, while changes in phase angle and standardized phase angle are not related to increased mortality risk.
