Pathophysiology of obesity and its associated diseases

Xin Jin et al.

Summary: The occurrence of obesity has increased worldwide and contributes to the development of various diseases. Excess energy intake leads to adipocyte hypertrophy, hyperplasia, and visceral fat formation, resulting in cardiovascular and liver diseases. Adipose tissue can secrete adipokines and cytokines, causing insulin resistance and hyperglycemia, exacerbating obesity-related diseases. Although progress has been made in obesity treatment, the progression and pathogenesis of obesity-induced diseases are still unclear. Understanding their links is essential for better management and treatment.

Does menopause elevate the risk for developing depression and anxiety? Results from a systematic review

Salama Alblooshi et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to determine if menopause increases the risk of developing diagnostic depression and anxiety. Menopause-associated vasomotor symptoms such as insomnia and hot flushes are well known, but there has been no systematic review of the psychological consequences of menopause. Using PRISMA methodology, the researchers conducted a systematic review of published original data in English examining the relationship between menopause and depression and anxiety. The results showed that depression and anxiety are common during menopause, and vasomotor symptoms and prior history of major depression increase the risk of menopausal-associated depression. Psychosocial factors and estrogen fluctuations affecting serotonin and GABA may also contribute to the increased vulnerability to depression and anxiety during menopause.
